TFootage circulating shows a man on Oxford Street being sprayed with a red substance by someone who accused him of pickpocketing, to "mark him as a thief". We get the frustration. Over 71,000 phones were stolen in London last year, nearly 200 a day, with Oxford Street and the West End the worst hotspots. Even after the Met's biggest ever crackdown, with hundreds of arrests, it's still everywhere. But this isn't the answer. Nothing has been proven against the man in this clip, and spraying anyone is assault, so the person doing the "marking" is the one most likely to end up arrested. Get it wrong and you've branded an innocent man in front of the world. Police have also found gangs paying kids as young as 14 to steal phones, so the person you grab is often not the person profiting. If you see a pickpocket, report it to police or a nearby officer. And protect yourself: keep your phone out of sight when you're not using it, zips over open pockets, and turn on Find My iPhone or Find My Device before it's ever taken.
