![A broken sparrow nest in a parking lot changed Sanjay Sahu’s life forever. Growing up in Chhattisgarh, Sanjay was raised with one simple lesson from his father: wherever you live, serve nature. But over time, city life and work pushed those values into the background. Then one day, he noticed a fallen sparrow nest lying abandoned on the ground. It reminded him of how silently these tiny birds were disappearing from our homes, streets, and mornings. Instead of moving on, he decided to act. He began placing water and grains for birds in old clay pots. Soon after, he started collaborating with local potters to make mud nests specially designed for sparrows. And rather than selling them, he distributed them completely free. For the last 10 years, Sanjay has dedicated his time, effort, and personal earnings to helping birds survive in urban spaces. So far, he has given away nearly 10,000 nests across seven villages around Mahasamund, where bird homes now hang outside countless households. Through his initiative Do Kadam Prakriti Ki Ore, he also plants trees to create safer spaces for birds to thrive.
