Losing a job is not the worst thing that can happen to anyone. He will get another one! The problem is the couple treating him that way because they don’t find his job valuable enough to respect him. How difficult was it to show him the receipt??

Shopkeepers law says you can only hold someone if you have reasonable suspicion they stole something. Unless he can identify the item he believes is being stolen (which he doesn’t) this is illegal. This dude is on a power trip.
