High-level programmers laugh at vibe coders for AI code slop.. then comes the Assembly programmer to remind them of their own slop.

Max respect to this boomer, truly the boss level old man in the young's men world. Even has a repo for managing AI agent swarms for engineering workflow. Top of his game.

Heโ€™s just larping. Assembly is already a high level language wrt to what the CPU actually does

pretty much depends on how high above the machine code the language is

Naah, having different outputs for different versions of compiler doesn't make compilers non-deterministic. Also, compiler optimization techniques are defined and deterministic. So you can actually micro-manage that behavior so we can consistently create same output with comp.

Who is the guy with that assembly knowledge? Does he have a YouTube channel?

This argument is weak for me.. A compiler is and always will be a finite state machine. A LLM is not. Or if you do want to still call it a finite state machine it is a astronomical large set of states.. So complex that it simply could not be in any meaniful way cataloged or indexed. Keep in mind that given sufficient memory LLMs outputs can be as unique as guid generation.

it's easier to start by reading and understanding your C code translated to asm

You know what makes me appreciate C. Programming in assembly. Dude never programmed a motorolla 68 series processor or worse asked to add features to a mainframe and it shows.

This is nostalgia for him.. Infact , from assembly to now AI writing code , this is too fast an advancement in ones lifetime. Even internet was a giant leap, now we are talking about AGI. Our older generations saw black&white TV converted to Color and that was a wow moment.

Memo: C, and actually most compiled languages, just compile your expressions to assembly you would have written by hand. Likewise control flow blocks. Give it up. (And languages like C, C++, Go, and others still let you use assembly if you want.)

He didnโ€™t trust C so he wrote a tool to fix the output assemblyโ€ฆ how do we apply this to AI written code now?

Fabio Makita's profile picture

Jean Filetonpaire's profile picture

Yes he was horrified, because it was horrifying. And pretending most LLM output is anywhere close to language-to-compiler-throughput is being absolutely delusional..

Aditya Raj's profile picture

C turned out to be right for coding (I'm assuming) after all the updates and whatever was needed, does that mean that after enough tweaks to AI, it can definitely be used as a coding tool and we'll never have to learn to code again unless you are to be a specialist in debugging?

Turbo C++ and GCC fully supported embedded assembly. I know, because I used it (GCC) when developing Playstation games. Even the more user-friendly macro-assembler is overkill for many tasks.

No surprises! and to make it worse, those who know about the design of modern hardware (ring -3, unintended instruction sets, the creeping use of AI in design of hardware, ...), openly express their shock that these hardware even work!!
