I’m not a strong fan of VDM, but I don’t dislike his work either. Society produces people like him to fill the vacuum left by failing state institutions. If our security agencies operated at even 80% capacity, there would be little need for him. The intense dislike many Nigerians direct at him is unnecessary. Few Nigerian youths or elders would take the risks he does. He is young and makes mistakes, yet the hate is unwarranted. Despite his shortcomings, he is making an impact and has built an influential platform. People should keep him in check, but not hate him outright. He fully deserves a seat on that panel, not as a legal or security expert, but as an advocate. The NBA needs feedback from voices like his.

Say what? For clarity, VDM was not invited to teach lawyers law or lecture them on legal practice. He was invited to contribute his perspective and experiences on insecurity. He has also been involved in one or two rescue efforts relating to insecurity in Nigeria, which gives him practical experience relevant to the subject being discussed. So, the argument that he is “not a professional or expert to educate lawyers” somewhat misses the point. Nobody invited him to educate lawyers on the law. The NBA can invite professionals, activists, victims, community stakeholders or people with relevant practical experience to contribute to a discussion. Being a lawyer is not a prerequisite for speaking on every subject discussed at a lawyers’ conference. Make una rest after all lawyers are not complaining.

That is where VDM and the likes of Sowore come in. So, to me VDM is more relevant to the common man in the dispensation of justice than many of the lawyers in Nigeria. What is wrong with bringing in someone who still be sharing undiluted experience, the media covers up, our institutions covers up, perhaps a need for a wildcard. Am I okay with his manner of speaking? No Was there a truth in what he said ? Yes That guy does not just speak, he speaks from an informed place. VDM did not become this influential in a vacuum. He is a product of institutional failure. In a country where the rule of law is upheld, where justice is blind to status, wealth, religion, or tribe, would someone like VDM have become the symbol of public accountability that he is today?
