I love walking the Brooklyn Bridge at night in the summertime, the breeze off the East River, the city lights sparkling ahead, and that feeling that you’re literally walking through history. ✨🌉 One of the best ways to experience New York is to walk the Brooklyn Bridge, and my favorite way to do it is by starting in DUMBO, Brooklyn and walking toward Manhattan so the skyline unfolds right in front of you. 🌆✨ 👉 Where to enter in DUMBO: Head to the pedestrian entrance at Washington Street & Prospect Street, right near the famous spot where you can snap that classic photo of the Manhattan Bridge framed between brick warehouses. From there, it’s an easy walk up onto the wooden pedestrian pathway of the Brooklyn Bridge. Now, the history: The bridge opened in 1883 as the first steel wire suspension bridge in the world. It was designed by John A. Roebling, carried on by his son Washington, and, most importantly, brought to life thanks to Emily Warren Roebling, who managed the project when Washington became ill. She studied engineering on the fly, met with politicians, and essentially ran the site, making her a trailblazing woman in 19th-century engineering. A few fun facts: •When it opened, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. •P.T. Barnum once marched 21 elephants across to prove it was safe! 🐘 •Today, it’s crossed by over 100,000 people daily. And of course, starting from DUMBO gives you even more to explore: •DUMBO = Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass (that’s where the name comes from). •It was once a gritty industrial district, full of warehouses and cobblestone streets, but is now one of the city’s trendiest neighborhoods with art galleries, shops, and the stunning Brooklyn Bridge Park. •Don’t miss Grimaldi’s pizza, Time Out Market rooftop views, or grabbing a cone at Ample Hills Creamery before your walk. 🍕🍦 And remember, the three East River bridges from Brooklyn to Manhattan can be remembered with “BMW”: •Brooklyn Bridge •Manhattan Bridge •Williamsburg Bridge All iconic in their own right, but the Brooklyn Bridge is the grand dame. 🌉
