Yesterday, May 19, I arrived for a visit with Marwan Barghouti — a meeting that had been scheduled more than a month ago. Good morning from Brooklyn, NY. I’m back at the Brooklyn location where, not too long ago, I documented something that looked like it came straight out of a horror movie. Today, there’s a noticeable difference. The people with serious drug issues who were hanging around inside the kids’ playground, using drugs and causing chaos, are no longer there like they were before. The playground is actually being used by the kids again. Recently, Assemblymember Brook-Krasny worked with the city to get the homeless encampment removed. I also want to give credit to the city for sending agencies out to clean up and address the location. The encampment was less than half a block away, and every morning some people from that camp would walk down into the area and start using drugs. I spoke with some neighbors, and they told me things have dramatically slowed down since I documented what was happening and after the encampment was removed. But let’s be clear — the problem hasn’t completely gone away. Around the outskirts of the park, I still see people dealing with drug issues hanging around outside people’s homes, yelling, screaming and causing commotion but it's a lot less than it was . So while the playground itself is much better, there are still issues around the surrounding area that need to be addressed. There are also multiple schools nearby, so this matters to the entire neighborhood. Credit where credit is due: Alec Krasny worked with the city, and the city responded by removing the encampment and sending agencies out to clean up and address the area. It has made a noticeable difference. But the work isn’t over. There’s more coming that I can’t talk about yet. For now, check out the short documentary and investigation I put out below. You know? Some idea of those whether it be certain countries or certain people's maybe it was this holdover from World War 2 and this thought that this was, like so that the lines were clear and that there was going to be these human rights goals laid out and that there would be things stood up for, and that if these things weren't done, there would be pushback, and these were the and I really thought that's what it was. I even thought that's what the United Nations was… And I thought, okay. There's a there's some lines in the sand. There's some understanding. We're gonna grow and fight for improvements in these areas. And and to watch to watch and understand more and more how it's just simply that's not what it is. That's not the world. When I am at the gym and I see somebody’s water bottle there or a towel or something. I know they just stepped away for a moment and that the machine is occupied. Out of respect I won’t move it out of the way only for them to come back and have to explain themselves anyways. This young lady on the machine left her water bottle on it because she stepped away for a moment to use the restroom only for somebody else to come by and try to use it in her place. Would you have understood the etiquette or is it just a free for all? When I first started working out I was unfamiliar with the gym etiquette. Some people just got done with a hard set and need to stand up and walk for a few moneys or get a drink of water and they use it as their rest period so that they can go back at it. Interrupting that process is the same thing as booting them off the machine mid workout. It’s rude and uncalled for but why does it keep happening? I think what it is, is that some people are very judgmental, they see others and think that they are more serious about working out than the other person so that to them it means they are entitled to use it first because their workouts are more important. I used to let them do that to me but no more. I treat it as first come first serve, if they don’t want to wait then maybe they need to avoid the gym during peak hours. This is the very reason I work out in the middle of the night most of the time. I rather not be bothered and if I need to take my time I can, most of the time nobody else is even there anyways when I go.
