Spike Lee on how he overcame funding shortfalls & Warner Bros' indifference to get 'Malcolm X' (1992) made: "The making of that film was the hardest thing I ever had to do. And the great Marvin Worth bought the rights from Dr. Betty Shabazz, way back. Way back. And for 20-something years, he tried to get it made — several directors, several — several actors. And finally, Norman Jewison was the director, with Denzel. And when I heard that Norman Jewison was directing this, I said, “Hell to the nah!” But here’s the thing, though. I respect Norman Jewison, because it was his job; he gracefully bowed out. He didn’t have to do that. And so, once we got that, I knew we had to do the film. But from the very beginning, we didn’t have enough money. We didn’t have enough money. I put half my salary into the film. Warner Bros. knew it. We all knew it. But we’re just gonna go. I mean, this whole thing is — and, you know, in the studio system, you got to get them impregnated. So we knew one day the money would run out. And Warner Bros. did not want the length of that film to be three hours. We knew — it was not about ego. To tell the many different lives that Malcolm led, we needed that time. We needed that time. And we went out — it’s crazy. We showed the four-hour version to Warner Bros. Four hours. We knew we’d cut it down, but… It was the day of the Rodney King verdict. So, we’re screening a film for Warner Bros. executives, the two presidents, and the secretaries are coming in and out, because L.A. is burning. But to their credit, they stayed throughout the whole four hours. And so, it was a long discussion, because they had to — we had — I think a helicopter came to Warner Bros.’ lot and took them to where they had to go. And they said, “How long the film might be?” I said, “I need as long as” — I said, “How long is JFK?” Because JFK was coming out. And they said, ”JFK is two hours.” They didn’t know I know Oliver Stone. I call Oliver. I goes, “Oliver, how long is JFK?” He says, “Spike, it’s three hours, but don’t tell them I told you so.” So we knew that we had to keep going. We did not cut the film, the length. And Warner Bros. let the bond company take over the film. All the people in postproduction got registered letters saying, “You’re fired.” As I said before, I already put half my salary already into the film. So it was the lowest point in my life, with the exception of my mother dying. And Malcolm came to me: self-determination, self-reliance. I kept thinking about that again and again and again. What does that mean? And then it hit me like a ton of bricks: I know some Black folks that got some money. So, this was the plan. Not did I only know them, but I had their phone number. So I made a list. And here’s the key thing. This was not — it was not — they couldn’t get any money back. It wasn’t a tax write-off. This had to be like, “Here, take it. Take it.” And the first person I called was Bill Cosby. Called him up, said, “Bill” — first thing I said was, “How’s Camille?” Then I told him what it was about. He said, “Spike, I’ll put the check in the mail.” I said, “Nah.” I knew he lived in a townhouse, Upper East Side. Knocked on the door. Didn’t even come in. THIS WEEKEND'S STORM FEATURES MANY TWISTS AND TURNS.. MY 1ST CALL SNOWFALL MAP... I feel strongly enough to put out a first look at the weekend storm (Saturday afternoon - Sunday morning) as the models have essentially held on to a consistent trend in the vort max and low development going into Saturday afternoon. Two area's that remain a stronger confidence level for me is the area in pink where the mode of precip is pure snow and gray area where mixing will be a big factor during the middle of the event. When you run the overall precip numbers and thermals you arrive in this ball park (outlined below) The twists and turns come into play once we see the vort max rotate north and the interaction between the energy and coastal low by Saturday night. This is why you see such a massive range (6-16") in the pink area as this could either go into a more moderate snow event working off 10:1-11:1 ratios and ending quickly OR we see a slower process with more moisture working northbound. The area in white should see at least 4" with a 6" maximum. I don't see this area going much higher given all that is on the table and how climatology goes. That said, this is also an area I could easily extend into #Baltimore and #DC faster than #Philadelphia and #NYC given wind vectors and cold air advancement. A personal aside, as a TV meteorologist and private sector forecaster I don't like to over-promise and under deliver. That costs $$ and bothers people. THIS WEEKEND'S STORM FEATURES MANY TWISTS AND TURNS.. MY 1ST CALL SNOWFALL MAP... I feel strongly enough to put out a first look at the weekend storm (Saturday afternoon - Sunday morning) as the models have essentially held on to a consistent trend in the vort max and low development going into Saturday afternoon. Two area's that remain a stronger confidence level for me is the area in pink where the mode of precip is pure snow and gray area where mixing will be a big factor during the middle of the event. When you run the overall precip numbers and thermals you arrive in this ball park (outlined below) The twists and turns come into play once we see the vort max rotate north and the interaction between the energy and coastal low by Saturday night. This is why you see such a massive range (6-16") in the pink area as this could either go into a more moderate snow event working off 10:1-11:1 ratios and ending quickly OR we see a slower process with more moisture working northbound. The area in white should see at least 4" with a 6" maximum. I don't see this area going much higher given all that is on the table and how climatology goes. That said, this is also an area I could easily extend into #Baltimore and #DC faster than #Philadelphia and #NYC given wind vectors and cold air advancement. A personal aside, as a TV meteorologist and private sector forecaster I don't like to over-promise and under deliver. That costs $$ and bothers people. 🚨 I MET THE ONE… WHILE HE WAS PULLING ME FROM THE WRECKAGE HE CAUSED 🚨 1/ I never believed in soulmates. Never. Until the night a stranger almost killed me… and then refused to let me die alone. 2/ My name is Nova. It was 1:17 a.m. on a rainy backroad. I was driving home after a double shift, half-asleep, radio blasting to stay awake. Headlights came out of nowhere. 3/ The truck swerved. Metal screamed. Glass exploded. Everything went black. 4/ When I opened my eyes, I was hanging upside down, pinned by the seatbelt, blood in my mouth. A man’s face appeared at the shattered window. The Truth About The MLK Jr. Gunshot—that neither Blake Neff, nor any of these people yapping about "muh .30-06 bullet that killed MLK didn't exit his body"—will tell you (and probably don't even know about): 1. I might get in trouble for posting this but screw it. Last year when the Rico-TSR thing came about I was tasked with putting together a plan of how it should be announced. That whole period is another story but I created a spreadsheet of how things had to go down. Working around all of our other scheduled races and commitments it included creating the announcement skits, photos, PR, contacting media and more. This is a clip of the video that was the final piece of my plan. Except we never published it. The idea of this video was for Rico to reflect on the news. So inside the gym of his newly built shop, he sat on the rower and I pressed record. The edited video goes for ~17 mins. He explained what this opportunity meant to him and as he got more into it he began to cry. Sitting behind the camera I did the same. It suddenly became a uniquely private and emotional moment. Why? Well I won’t speak for him but my take is this; From the outside you either see his stature or someone who loves to sling merch or both. A couple of things that shouldn’t define him. He works out almost every day if not twice. He is the most personal and hospitable driver I know when it comes to being involved with his team and his partners. He does more promo work and signs more autographs than any other driver. He puts an enormous amount of energy into ensuring fans go home having enjoyed a memorable experience at the races. Between the late nights and early mornings the guy hardly sleeps. Then somehow is left alone to strap into the racecar to make driving the wheels off look easy. And for someone who doesn’t necessarily need to do any of the aforementioned I think this clip is the moment that it finally hit him that after years of refining himself both on and off the track, he was being rewarded. He decided not to publish this video but I think needs to be shown. Maybe one day it’ll make sense to post the full video but for now when you see the defending High Limit Racing champ roll out in the Tony Stewart Racing CarQuest #24 this week in Las Vegas for the ‘26 opener, just know that you’re watching a one-of-a-kind kid live out a dream that he worked his ass off for. -Toby
