It'd really affect their lives if young men from Moscow or St. Petersburg were suddenly being called up and dying on front line. I think Kremlin would have to close the borders for young men in order to prevent people from fleeing the country. In doing so, they'd create all sorts of anger. And that kind of anger could eventually lead to something really painful for Vladimir Putin. It might lead to an overthrow. He is a dictator. He's very good at dictating and terrorizing people. So far, he's succeeded, but he doesn't know at what level anger overcomes fear. Right now, fear is what keeps people from overthrowing him, but at some point anger may prevail if he does mass mobilization. Some people would argue that that may be the tipping point. Nobody knows. SNYDER: The balance between the oligarchy and fascism is different in Russia and the US. I think Putin, unlike Trump, actually believes in some world beyond the visible world. In which what’s true is will and there’s a mystical past which contains the essence of the nation. And by taking violent action in the present, we can return to that mystical past. I think Putin actually believes stuff like that, and in that sense, he’s more of a fascist than Trump. For Trump, he says fascist things, he does fascist things, and he certainly has people around him who are fascists. But for him, the balance is different. It’s more about, "I need to make more money." In fairness to Trump, Putin already has $200, $300 billion. Whereas Trump is gonna die a kind of petty billionaire by that scale. Maybe if Trump had $200, $300 billion, he would also have wild fantasies. But anyway, in the world we’re in, that’s difference. For Trump, it’s more about using white supremacy. Trump is happy to have people hurt. And happy to have us be happy that people are hurt, but he’s not willing to do some of the things that Putin is willing to do. Putin has been willing to watch easily a million of his people, probably well over, get killed and maimed in war that Russia is going to lose. Whereas Trump is willing to watch 5 people, or 10, or 15, or 20, maybe 100 people get killed. But no way Trump has wherewithal to say, "We’re going to have a full-scale invasion of another country and hundreds of thousands of you are going to die, but that’s going to be worth it." He just doesn’t believe in anything enough to demand that other people believe in some cause like that. His ability to control his own political future by starting foreign wars is limited because his ability to fight foreign wars is very limited. Because he’s willing to cause pain, but he can’t stomach that much pain, and he can’t really imagine that other people would. Whereas Putin really does think that other people are going to care about Russian glory. Trump doesn’t care about American glory. I don’t think he can really imagine that other people can care about American glory. And so, I think in his case, the oligarchy or his desire to be a rich oligarch is the dominant factor, and it actually constrains his ability to use the more militaristic stuff.

Trump wants to be Putin's friend, gain Putin's approval. There might even be compromising issue that Russians might have on him. There's also been lifetime of deals between Trump and Russians, so he's built up a massive economic history of dealing with Russians. He clearly wants to get back to working with them. But all we can say is that when it comes to Putin, Trump is absolutely going to do what he wants to do. It doesn't matter what the public opinion is.

They want our people to leave the big cities, first and foremost the capital, and to create chaos in the Odesa region. They tried very hard in Kharkiv. Once again, I am very grateful to the people of Kharkiv. He could not break them, even when the enemy was very close. He simply could not. Honestly, Kharkiv defeated Putin. I am convinced of that. For him, Kharkiv is symbolic — Ukraine’s first capital. The people of Kharkiv have been incredible. All of our people have. Now there is terror against Kyiv.

You get Zelenskyy to give Putin something, Putin gets good deal, gets sanctions lifted, they all go off and make money, and everybody's happy. Trump thought that would be simple. It turns out not to be the case. Putin would not accept any deal because he wants all of Ukraine. Zelenskyy is not going to give away Ukrainian people and Ukrainian territory. Trump said at the time, you know, to Zelenskyy, "You don't have any cards." He was wrong. Zelenskyy has a lot of cards. I think Trump now realizes that. He sees that Zelenskyy actually has some cards and is able to use them well, and is maybe winning here. Putin, on the other hand, is gradually losing.

Journalist pointed out that Russia is providing Iranian targeting information to hit American bases, and asked Trump, "What do you think about this?" Trump was desperately trying not to acknowledge it, and so he said, "Well, I'm not sure that's true. I'm going to check with Putin on that," and so on and so forth. It's pretty obvious to me that Trump is on Putin's side. It's obvious to a lot of people who have been following this thing. I don't think you can sort of look at the facts on the surface and say, "Well, it makes sense that America would be mad about that," because it's not America, it's Trump. Trump has got whatever deal he has with Putin. I don't think we'll ever know exactly what that is. But whatever that deal is causes him not to act in the US national interest when it comes to Russia.

Nothing has changed. ◾️ Basically, Putin has withdrawn from negotiations; ◾️ Putin is preparing for a summer military campaign, and he believes he can significantly improve Russia's military position; ◾️ Putin is not going to end the war; ◾️ Putin does not believe that Trump will make him stop and push Russia out of the oil market. Putin's statements yesterday about how he will crush Ukraine and put it under external governance under the UN management are his new fantasies. Russia will soon be spreading the narrative that the Ukrainian government is illegitimate and that it does not control the army. Also, the narrative that Ukraine is a terrorist country is being spread. It's all a lie, of course. But a lot of money has been invested in it.
