Amish mother arrested after she "gave her son to God". We are at Atwood Lake in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The woman in the bodycam footage is Ruth Miller, a 40-year-old mother from an Old Order Amish community in Millersburg. She and her husband, 45-year-old Marcus Miller, had taken their four children on a family camping trip. What no one knew was that both parents were experiencing profound, parallel psychological distress, believing God was directly commanding them to complete "tasks" to prove their faith. Early Saturday morning, Ruth jumped into the lake, later telling police she believed she could walk on water and that God told her to let a fish swallow her. When she failed, Marcus felt his own faith wasn't strong enough. He walked back to the lake alone to attempt a swim to a distant sandbar to prove his devotion. Tragically, he drowned. Operating under intense psychotic delusion, Ruth’s actions escalated sharply throughout the morning: She took her 4-year-old son, Vincen, to the dock and threw him into the water as a sacrifice, believing she was "giving him to God." She then loaded her three teenage children into a golf cart and drove it at full speed into a stone wall, sending the cart plunging into the lake. Fortunately, the teenagers managed to escape the submerged vehicle physically unharmed. When first responders arrived to investigate the submerged golf cart, they found Ruth in a frantic, highly detached state. As seen in the bodycam footage, she calmly explained to authorities that her husband was at the bottom of the lake because a giant fish swallowed him, and openly admitted to throwing her toddler into the water. Emergency dive teams immediately searched the area and recovered the bodies of both 4-year-old Vincen and Marcus Miller. Ruth Miller was immediately hospitalized and later indicted on seven counts, including aggravated murder and child endangerment. The local Amish church quickly issued a statement clarifying that these horrific actions were the result of severe mental illness, not their religious teachings. After evaluations by three independent psychiatric experts, a judge officially ruled on March 13, 2026, that Ruth Miller was not guilty by reason of insanity. She has been indefinitely committed to a maximum-security mental health facility for treatment. This is a sad story with a tragic outcome. I feel terrible for the remaining children.
