I want to hear all the competing theses for how manufacturing happens in space. My current view: The first thing we'll manufacture in space won't be spacecraft. It'll be hydrocarbons. We need fuel and food. Survival before sophistication. For a long time, most hardware will still be shipped from Earth. Manufacturing will mostly mean repair, maintenance, and replacement of spare parts by astronauts maybe robots. 1000s of Starships leaving with lots of spare parts every 18 month. So the real challenge isn't producing known parts. It's dealing with the unexpected. Every settlement, station, ship, or habitat will eventually break in ways nobody predicted. New missions will create needs nobody anticipated. Waiting months for a launch window is not a viable supply chain. That implies, space manufacturing cannot begin with giant, specialized factories. It starts with highly versatile systems capable of making many different things from limited feedstocks. Multi-purpose robots. Flexible. General-purpose manufacturing cells. In other words, the opposite of most factories today. My bet is that space manufacturing evolves as a network of distributed robotic job shops and microfactories, not monolithic production plants. The manufacturing systems that win early because they can repair the unexpected will become the industrial legacy of space. When demand eventually grows large enough for mass production, those flexible systems will already be everywhere so that is the paradigm that will scale to large volumes. Shane Wighton, from the YouTube channel Stuff Made Here, used 3D-printed tooling to form a sheet metal component as part of a concept validation process. Metal manufacturing is essential for all areas of the economy. Because of their strength, stiffness, and long-term durability, metal components are used in applications from appliances to construction parts and car body panels. Traditional metal manufacturing techniques include forming, casting, molding, joining, and machining. Sheet metal forming involves various processes where force is applied to a piece of sheet metal to plastically deform the material into the desired shape, modifying its geometry rather than removing any material. Sheet metals can be bent or stretched into a variety of complex shapes, permitting the creation of complex structures with great strength and a minimum amount of material. Sheet metal forming is the most cost-effective forming procedure today for manufacturing parts in large quantities. It can be highly automated in factories or, at the other end of the spectrum, manually operated in metal workshops for small series parts. It is a versatile, consistent, and high-quality procedure to create accurate metal parts with limited material waste. From metal cans to protective housing for hardware, parts created by sheet metal forming are found everywhere in our daily lives. The Cybercab is aiming to produce 2 million units per year. Let this sink in. Today, Tesla produces about ~1.7 million vehicles per year total, across its entire lineup. And now Tesla is preparing to outproduce that with one single vehicle, a fully autonomous one. This is Elon and Tesla going ALL-IN on autonomy. Production is scheduled to start April 2026 at Giga Texas, with volume ramping throughout the year. And as of early 2026, Cybercab prototypes are already being tested around the U.S. The Tesla Cybercab is built from the ground up for unsupervised autonomy. There is no steering wheel and no pedals, just cameras, AI, and Tesla’s custom inference computers. No lidar and radar like other companies, just pure vision and software. Elon put it best on the Q3 2024 earnings call: “It’s not just a revolutionary vehicle design, but a revolution in vehicle manufacturing that is also coming with the Cybercab.” That quote matters a lot bc that means the entire way a vehicle is manufactured is changing with the Cybercab. Tesla is designing what Elon calls “the machine that builds the machine.” The Cybercab uses Tesla’s unboxed manufacturing process, where major sections are built in parallel instead of one long assembly line. There are fewer parts, less steps & cost, and faster scale. That’s how you make 2 million Cybercabs per year possible. FYI, this is not going to be easy though. Elon has been brutally honest about production for many years: • “Prototypes are easy, production is hard.” • “The extreme difficulty of scaling production of new technology is poorly understood. It’s 1000% to 10,000% harder than making a few prototypes.” • “For cars, it’s maybe 100 times harder to design the manufacturing system than the car itself.” He reinforced this again in January 2026 when talking about Cybercab and Optimus on 𝕏: “Initial production is always very slow and follows an S-curve. The speed of the production ramp is inversely proportional to how many new parts and steps there are. For Cybercab and Optimus, almost everything is new, so the early production rate will be agonizingly slow - but eventually end up being insanely fast.” This is the key thing most people miss about Tesla manufacturing. Early output will be slow by design. Almost everything is new like the vehicle architecture, factory layout, AI hardware, and manufacturing flow. But once it works and clicks, it begins to scale hard. Tesla already proved they can do this. They survived Model 3 production hell. They turned Model Y into the BEST selling car in the world, of any kind. They ramped Cybertruck, which has over 30,000+ unique parts, to meaningful volume. Elon summed it up perfectly in 2024: “Compared to the insane pain of reaching high volume, positive margin production, prototypes are a piece of cake.” That’s why Tesla makes manufacturing look easy bc they already earned the scars from the last vehicle lineups. The Cybercab is aiming to be: 1/ Under $30,000 price 2/ ~$0.20 per mile operating cost 3/ 200+ mile range 4/ Up to 5x utilization vs personal cars 5/ Designed to run nearly nonstop 24/7 This is what you call manufacturing + AI + autonomy converging at scale. The competitors are still showing prototypes and demos, while Tesla is building new production lines, expanding factories, and actually building the product. I remember when Elon told me in the past that one of Tesla’s key advantage long term was going to be manufacturing technology. I get it now.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), in a major enforcement action against illicit cigarette manufacturing, has sealed a clandestine cigarette manufacturing unit in District Chakwal and seized a substantial quantity of raw tobacco, cigarette-manufacturing material, unstamped cigarettes and machinery. The overall economic impact of the operation has been estimated at approximately Rs. 211 million. The operation was conducted by teams of the FBR’s Intelligence & Investigation Directorate, Islamabad, in coordination with the Inland Revenue Enforcement Network. Acting upon credible information the teams raided the premises of Hunter Tobacco SMC Pvt. Ltd. located near Dharabi on Kallar Kahar Road, Chakwal. During the search, the enforcement teams found the premises being used for clandestine manufacture of cigarettes without the mandatory tax stamps under the Track & Trace System. The manufacturing unit had also not been integrated with the Track & Trace System, which is a mandatory requirement for tobacco-sector manufacturers. The operation resulted in the seizure of approximately 12,600 kilograms of raw tobacco, sufficient for manufacturing around 630,000 packets of cigarettes, besides filter rods, cigarette paper, aluminium foil, packaging material and other manufacturing inputs. The seized goods were shifted to a government warehouse and the premises were subsequently sealed. The estimated revenue impact includes approximately Rs. 90 million in potential tax evasion that could have resulted from the sale of the cigarettes manufactured from the seized raw tobacco. The overall economic impact of Rs. 211 million also includes the estimated duty and taxes evaded on stock found at the premises and the value of machinery and other materials seized/sealed during the operation. The FBR has reiterated that the manufacture and sale of cigarettes without payment of applicable duties and taxes, as well as non-compliance with the Track & Trace System, constitutes a serious violation of tax laws. The Board is taking strict enforcement measures to curb illicit manufacturing, protect legitimate businesses and safeguard government revenue. Further legal action and criminal proceedings against the persons found involved in the illegal activity will be initiated upon completion of the ongoing investigation, in accordance with law. The FBR has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying enforcement against illicit tobacco manufacturing and other forms of tax evasion, while ensuring a level playing field for compliant taxpayers and legitimate businesses. *******

The video shows one of the most technologically advanced domestic machines: the 2000VH five-axis milling machining center. It was created for the needs of the aircraft, engine and defense industries. During the Metalloobrabotka-2025 exhibition, the machine processes one of the most important elements of an aircraft engine - an impeller (blade machine). Such parts are used in aircraft engines. The diameter of this aluminum product is 70 cm, the height is about 30 cm, the weight is about 15 kg. The machine copes with the work perfectly - pay attention to the screen! The equipment was created by our holding company "STAN" . The machine is designed for large-sized parts of complex shape. It is capable of working with products up to 2 m in diameter and weighing up to 5 tons. At the same time, the accuracy achieved is up to hundredths of a millimeter. The model is built on a high-rigidity structure, its internal cavities are filled with synthetic granite. As a result, the vibration resistance of the equipment frame is comparable to heavy cast iron. The machine is equipped with a Russian numerical control system and a liquid cooling system. The use of direct drives allows achieving high dynamic stability and eliminating backlash in movement. Among the built-in functions are systems for measuring tools and parts, monitoring processes and industrial safety. 2000VH has no analogues in technical characteristics among domestic equipment and will replace imported models at Russian enterprises. rostecru

Over the last decade, a consensus has grown on the Left and Right that the US needs to be more self-sufficient when it comes to manufacturing. During Covid, we discovered we didn’t make much of the equipment we needed to deal with a pandemic and were thus dependent on other nations, and so Congress passed and Trump signed the CARES Act in part to spend money to support domestic manufacturing of medical supplies. In 2022, a bipartisan majority in Congress passed the CHIPS Act to bring semiconductor manufacturing back to the U.S. out of the recognition that we had become dangerously dependent on foreign nations for microchips, which have become general-purpose technologies, necessary for national security, and upon which the AI revolution will be built. Where America had a $38 billion trade surplus in 1991 on advanced technology manufacturing, today it has a $299 billion deficit. Liberals and conservatives, Leftists and Rightists, have long shared a broad agreement that manufacturing and its knock-on industries are an essential source of employment for non-college-educated working-class people, and that the loss of manufacturing contributed to social fragmentation, family breakdown, and the drug addiction and death crisis. In a 2024 survey, Americans agreed ten to one that “we need a stronger manufacturing sector; 47% said America suffered from globalization, while 33% said it benefited. It is partly for that reason that Joe Biden, in perhaps the most bipartisan and non-ideological decision of his presidency, kept in place the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump during his first term as president. And yet both liberals and many conservatives are reacting with outrage as President Donald Trump puts in place precisely the trade tariffs needed to reduce our dangerous dependency on other nations and increase our manufacturing of the goods we need for national security, economic security, and societal wellbeing. The China tariffs, the CARES Act, and the CHIPS Act did not result in the return of much manufacturing, much less the rebalancing of trade. Total manufacturing jobsare 12.8 million in December 2019 and are 12.8 million today. The US still depends on China and other nations for active pharmaceutical ingredients, personal protective equipment, microchips, and critical minerals. Suffice to say, we are a very long way from a manufacturing renaissance sufficiently robust to revitalize the communities that have lost good, high-wage jobs to China and other competitors and even rivals internationally. The reason is clear. The average tariff level globally is 6.7% compared to America’s 2.7%. And simply subsidizing industries may not be enough for two major semiconductor manufacturers, Intel and TSMC, to produce domestically without tariffs. And, they say, our goal should not be to return manufacturing to the United States, except for a few exceptions, which Congress has already made. For centuries, economists have argued that some nations, such as poorer ones, are more suited to produce many products than richer ones. Americans making t-shirts at $20 per hour are less efficient than the Vietnamese making them for $3 per hour. And the US should not be trying to replace perfectly reasonable products to import, like aluminum from Canada, which we have no reason to ever go to war with, and which has access to cheap hydroelectricity to make it. Over half of American families have money in the stock market, and they will all suffer, anti-tariff liberals and conservatives say. The economic system we have had since World War II has worked to maximize win-win relationships that result in poorer nations climbing the development ladder with manufacturing and wealthier nations like the US focused on services. But it’s unwise to evaluate policies based on the short-term impact of the stock market. Anti-tariff voices grossly overstate the comparative advantage when it comes to manufacturing, and the postwar system, economically and militarily, is no longer in the interests of non-college-educated Americans, who are both more vulnerable and more numerous than the college-educated elite. There is no need to bring back a significant amount of low-skill and nonstrategic manufacturing like T-shirts, and Trump has not advocated that. America may need to bring back some low-skill jobs, such as manufacturing protective gear. But our priority should rightly be high-skill manufacturing, and CARES, CHIPS, and the Trump-Biden China were, obviously, not enough. It may be fine to rely on Canada for aluminum. But the tariffs against it and Mexico, as well as Trump’s stated desire to make it the 51st state, should be viewed as the president negotiating in preparation for upcoming trade talks between the three countries. While offshoring manufacturing policies benefited multinational corporations, bankers, and consumers, they often devastated communities built on manufacturing, mining, and manual labor. US companies moved production to countries with lower labor costs, fewer regulations, and subsidized exports. Economists calculate that just the so-called “China Shock,” that country’s entry into the World Trade Organization, alone cost the U.S. 2.4 million jobs and had ripple effects across entire communities. The average manufacturing wage is $103,000 per year compared to $37,000 per year for the average service sector wage. And where a service sector job supports 2 to 3 jobs, a manufacturing job supports nine jobs. Continuing with a system that is fundamentally advantageous to a minority of the country and disadvantageous to a majority is not sustainable and unwise to prop up. Trump’s trade actions are part of a broader return to nationalism underway globally, and they can’t be understood on economic grounds alone. Regarding priorities, we should put the two-thirds of the country that is non-college educated working-class ahead of the 50% of the country who own stocks, for moral and democratic reasons. America is deeply divided. While there are many proximate reasons for this, including geographic sorting, cable TV, and social media, the underlying reasons are economic. The gulf between the educated elites and the non-educated working class has grown dangerously large. Many critics of the tariffs are well-intentioned. They are right to worry that they could come with significant economic costs and disruption. The concern of many of them is genuinely for the working class and poor, who higher prices for imported goods would most harm. However, many American elites today identify more with their global counterparts than their fellow Americans. And that’s a huge problem. In his study of 21 civilizations, British historian Arnold J. Toynbee found that civilizations collapse not simply from external invasion but from internal decay, precisely when their elites stop identifying with the people. “Civilizations die from suicide,” he famously wrote, “not murder.” Civilizations all depend on their elites, Toynbee noted, or the people he called the “creative minority.” But rising success creates decadence, complacency, and eventually contempt toward their people, and they start to identify with elites in other nations. This is all a natural outgrowth of trade, cosmopolitanism, and snobbery. It starts to view the ordinary people as “deplorables.” At this point, the elite lose their creativity and become simply the “dominant minority,” one that rules no longer by example but rather by manipulation or force. Toynbee could be describing America in the 21st Century. College-educated elites look down on the American working class and identify with other professional and managerial elites in Europe and other nations. They sympathize less with the low-skilled American citizen born here and more with the low-skilled foreign migrant here illegally. Such elites are more concerned with tariffs' impact on their stock portfolio and the cost of their gadgets than they are with the downward pressure illegal migrants put on wages or with how nations manipulate their currency to retain manufacturing. Toynbee said that, at this stage of development, a nation’s elites become “parasites or renegades,” alienated and contemptuous toward the culture that produced them. Civilizations at this late stage are morally hollow and thus fragile and prone to abuses of power, like censorship, lawfare, and the weaponization of government agencies. And these civilizations disparage their traditions in ways that the American elites have disparaged America’s founding and its history as essentially evil, due to the unavoidable tragedy of indigenous genocide and slavery, even though a civil war that killed over 600,000 people was fought to end it. But Toynbee didn’t believe that civilizational collapse was inevitable; some societies can snap back....
