The ultimate goal of writing is to create a Reader's Trance. That's when the writing is so captivating that your reader is fully immersed. Sometimes, they'll even forget they're reading. This is as opposed to the default state where a reader is bored and checked out. So, how do you create this state? "Reader's Trance operates at three scales. First, at the scale of tension: you need an unknown element that compels the reader forward seeking resolution. Humans hate the unknown, making this the root level of the trance. Second, at the mid-level, paragraphs serve as the microstructure. Each paragraph should have mini-hooks and punchlines, creating a stable, repetitive rhythm. If this rhythm breaks, the reader might lose interest. While this stable structure exists, a separate element should constantly change—like paragraph length or the immersion level of examples. This creates the mid-level part of the trance. Third, at the micro-level, it's about imagery and sound. Are you rendering language so concretely that the reader experiences a vivid hallucination? Think of reading Harry Potter and feeling completely immersed. This is the deepest level of trance, where the reader isn't just reading. They're internally rendering the experience." Michael Dean

My dad spent his career building a small, independent allergy practice in Augusta, Georgia. It was our family business and it was his life's work. When it came time for him to retire, he wanted to pass it on to someone who would continue that work but no one wanted it. Not because it wasn't meaningful, but because independent practice wasn't valued anymore. What was valued was the land. Today there's a McDonald's where his practice used to be. We're grateful for the income it provides my parents but that's not what was supposed to be there. And yet here I am, running my own independent practice in Austin. Maybe that's crazy after watching what my dad went through. But I'm not doing this because it's easy, I'm doing it because it needs to be done. If we're not honest about how hard this is, we can't fix it. Independent physicians need to be valued. They need to be paid fairly. And when they retire, their work should be worth passing on. The fact that it isn't is a sign that something has gone very wrong. This is my story. It's my dad's story. And it's the story of healthcare in America.

here is the first look at realtime voice mode in codex the ui is already in the app, but the codex backend endpoint does not seem to be live yet i got it running by forcing the local feature gate and using my own openai api key, so it goes through the public realtime api instead it's incredible, but this demo alone cost me ~$4 gpt realtime 2 is very expensive, which makes me wonder how they're going to handle it - part of the normal usage limit, or a separate limit like we had with gpt 5.3 codex spark? i'm turning it off until the official rollout but get excited, the next few weeks are going to be amazing

VERY COOL!! Thanks jordan for the tip, I can now test my iOS app on web I asked Claude Code to set up serve-sim, a web-based iOS simulator that can stream the iOS app my Claude Code on VPS built live to me, because it's on some Mac Mini in the cloud without even a GUI (it's headless) I cannot actually try it on the Mac itself! Before Claude would make me a page with screenshots but I had no idea how the app felt, now with this it works This is hosted on the Mac Mini via SSH (it shows localhost but it's a tunnel via SSH to the Mac Mini), bit laggy but nice!

I really enjoyed listening to Lane Kiffin today, he showed some humanity and humility. Some stories we've heard before, and some felt a little canned, but I left feeling pretty excited about the opportunity to work with him in the future. I'm looking at this like a summer romance, have fun while you're in it, but know going in that it's not built to last forever.

It turns out that about 40% of 4th graders in America CANNOT READ at a "Basic" reading level 😲 We have created an increasingly illiterate society in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in 2025, because apparently it's "racist" to practice phonics, or the sounding out of letters to form words. Yes, really. Instead, our children are being taught to just blanket memorize 100,000+ words in the English language by looking at a picture and memorizing the word that goes with it. No, I'm not kidding.
