Sciurus vulgaris ognevi, also known as the Ognev's red squirrel or Central Russian red squirrel, is a subspecies of the Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) native to central and eastern Russia. It is a small, arboreal squirrel with a reddish-brown coat and white underparts. It is primarily herbivorous, but will also eat nuts, seeds, and insects. Size: Head-and-body length: 19–23 cm (7.5–9 in); Tail length: 19–24 cm (7.5–9.5 in) Weight: 200–400 g (7–14 oz) Appearance: Reddish-brown coat with white underparts; bushy tail Diet: Herbivorous, but will also eat nuts, seeds, and insects Habitat: Coniferous and mixed forests Distribution: Central and eastern Russia Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN)
