Burnham is wrong on Brexit. He says it has done “more harm than good”. But since the referendum, real GDP growth has been: UK +13.2% France +12.8% Italy +10.7% Germany +7.8% Spain +21.5% If Brexit is the simple explanation for Britain’s weak growth, what explains France, Italy and Germany?...

@Rik_w2010 You’ve entirely missed the point. The relevant comparison is our growth compared to what it would have been without Brexit. Estimates vary including a loss of £90 billion. But all agree we’re worse off. Plus the EU countries will have been hit to a lesser degree too.

The most appropriate comparison is UK economy WITH Brexit compared to UK economy WITHOUT Brexit. Overwhelmingly, the evidence suggests that Brexit harmed the UK economy. How could it not?

A clear majority of sitting MPs in 2016 backed Remain. Contemporary surveys put the split at roughly 480 Remain to 160 Leave, with most Conservative MPs and nearly all Labour, SNP and Liberal Democrat MPs on the Remain side. The Cabinet was also heavily Remain. That is why the result surprised much of Westminster. They have resented us ever since

But our population has grown so real GDP/Head has not risen by so much. Germany +4% UK +7% France +8% Spain +11% Italy +12% Poland +40% In the EU our growth was rarely lower than France.

Yet more of your numberwang Jamie. 12% of that growth was when the UK was still in the single market and customs union. From the end of the transition period to now, so nearly 6 years, your #Brexit has delivered a pitiful 1.2% You aren't a credible statistician...

@JayneEv87424026 Billy bullshit is garnering votes to hold onto power at any cost - he reckons he can get 55% to vote Labour, plus the minorities and immigrants might scrape him over the line!

Poor Jamie. Not the brightest. Can you prove if we were in the EU growth would be less then 13.2%? No. So shut up then

People voted for sovereignty and black passports over wealth and GDP growth. The types of products exported from the UK to the EU declined by almost 54%; 20,000 businesses stopped trading with the bloc. BREXIT: wrong in 2016, still wrong in 2026.

Exactly. SINCE the ref. Unknown damage to both sides. We'll never know what the growth WOULD HAVE BEEN if we'd never left. Think back to 2015 and all the problems we had then. Or not 🙄 I blame it on Turkey joining & the cost of the European Army. Oh, wait...

I’ll stick with the consensus of economists who conclude Brexit is costing the UK over £100bn annually. But thank you for your single statistic that, I assume, those economists are aware of.

There is no growth except in controls over people’s freedoms ! The UK has no business discussing this failed union we paid through the nose to exit & were filed by the Politicans whom didn’t take us out of the ECHR for instance. Think has much better we would be now if they had

everybody knows Brexit was an oven-ready failcake that delivered nothing. no US trade deal, no new sovereignty, no savings for the NHS, no practical advantages. Just loads more red tape for businesses, percentage points off GDP growth, greater friction travelling and working abroad and less soft power in the world. We know this because we are living it. Please stop the broken record and move on

Since the referendum? We didn’t leave in 2016… Also are you measuring GDP growth in USD or local currency?

The point you're clearly avoiding is that making trade with our nearest and biggest market more difficult was always going to damage our economy. Whatever our relative growth is.

I'll just add on a hypothetical 4% that we would have grown by but didn't because we put up trading barriers with our nearest market. Then we're fucking killing it bro

You should compare the UK with Brexit against the UK without Brexit.

There’s so much more to Brexit than made up GDP numbers. It has split the country in two. The Quitters who voted for it didn’t even know what it was and they still have no idea.

Profilbild von MARK DAVEY

The question isn’t whether UK GDP grew after Brexit, but whether it grew less than it otherwise would have. And using this logic, Spain’s 21.5% growth would be evidence that EU membership boosted growth. You can’t have it both ways.
