August 8 marked 17 years since the start of Russia’s aggression against Georgia. The Russian invasion led to hundreds of deaths, thousands of refugees, and many wounded. The consequences of the so-called “independence” of South Ossetia within the “Russian world” have been catastrophic. The republic’s population has nearly halved and continues to decline. The average salary in South Ossetia is about $200, while in Georgia it is three times higher — $610. South Ossetia’s GDP is many times smaller than Georgia’s. Citizens of the self-proclaimed republic face semi-legal status even in Russia, are deprived of rights and freedoms, and have a cost of living — including food prices — significantly higher than in neighboring regions. Thus, the events of 2008 have had major demographic and economic consequences for South Ossetia, which are still felt today.

OTD in 2008: Russo-Georgian War officially begins as Georgian forces initiate a military operation inside the separatist region of South Ossetia and city of Tskhinvali following series of provocations by Russia-backed separatists. Russia responds by sending the 58th Combined Arms Army through the Roki Tunnel and advancing deeper into Georgia proper. The ground offensive coincides with the aerial bombing campaign and missile strikes against targets inside Georgia. The ceasefire is announced after 5 days of hostilities, with Russia increasing its military presence in the separatist republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the aftermath.
