I think that fast strides are the most powerful training stimulus for runners. For a glimpse at the physiology, I want to talk about my all-time favorite study. If we were playing FMK, I’d F this study, M this study, and K any study that is not this study. Published in 2018 in Physiological Reports, it had 20 trained athletes (14 men and 6 women) complete a 40-day intervention with 10 sessions involving 5-10 x 30 seconds with 3.5 minutes recovery, in conjunction with a 36% reduction in weekly volume. Before and after the intervention, participants did a time-to-exhaustion test, two 10km tests (one with glycogen depletion) preceded by 2 x 6 minute intervals at 60% of VO2 max, and a series of muscle biopsy and blood tests. Running economy during the 10k improved by 2.1% and during the intervals at 60% of VO2 max by 1.7%. In other words, the athletes improved at both hard efforts and easy ones. Meanwhile, there was no running economy change in the glycogen-depletion 10k, leading the authors to theorize that improvements were primarily related to changes in slow-twitch muscle fibers. Expression of protein dystrophin increased, which may enhance the ST-fiber structural integrity via the actin-myosin cross-bridge, improving running economy. In addition, the expression of UCP3 decreased, which may improve mitochondrial efficiency. In fast-twitch fibers, expression of the muscle protein SERCA1 decreased by 22%, which could reduce the energy turnover during exercise. Enzymatic activity and testosterone:cortisol ratio also went up. Don’t be discouraged, I only kinda know what a few of those words mean. The point is that as researchers introduce stride-like speed sessions and measure more variables, they often see major changes that may explain why Olympians are always doing strides. So when we use the term “running economy,” we’re actually incorporating dozens of these physiological variables, some of which we can measure and some of which we can’t, from the cells to the muscles to the circulatory and cardiovascular systems. Put it together, and getting faster is a wonderfully complex algorithm. Strides are one way to help solve it 💪

Pest Control “secret” for those small annoying flies that bug you while watching tv (feel free to repost since we’re moving into bug season in many areas): As we move into late spring/early summer months in US, many people like to leave doors open. Sometimes you’ll get an influx of small flies. There are 3 main species of flies that buzz around your head while sitting on the couch. The fruit fly, the phorid fly and the fungus gnat. If you see a small fly just “sitting” on your wall or a few small flies hanging out on the wall near your garbage can, it could be the fruit fly. I won’t go into boring details of how to tell various species apart, but will share one trick that can help reduce their population. First, keep your doors shut as much as possible. They gain entry usually that way, then find a source to breed in. To help reduce the breeding adults, 1) Grab a clear bowl or glass and place some red wine (or a few pieces of banana) in the glass. 2) Put some clear Saran Wrap or cling wrap on top fairly tight. 3) Next grab a pencil or pen and poke 4-6 holes in the wrap. This will allow the aroma of the fruit or wine to be strong as it comes out of the glass and will attract the flies 4) The flies will be immediately attracted to the bowl/cup and make their way into the holes you poked. Once in, they’ll drink the wine, or feed on the bananas and can’t get out. I prefer wine since they get drunk and drown. Bananas won’t kill them. Wine will. 5) Discard every 7 days and repeat. The best approach is to find the source of their breeding. Garbage disposal? (Bleach doesn’t work by the way) Garbage can? Debris under refrigerator? Also, re the fungus gnat species. This will not work. They feed on fungus, generally from overwatered potted plants inside or doors left open near extremely damp exterior area. One other method that is highly effective are the small plug in light traps. A combination of the above along with a plug in light trap will keep most fly issues at bay.

House of Neptune (1st Century AD) in Herculaneum : The association between Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius goes way back to 79 AD, where the fateful eruption of volcano smothered this town under pyroclastic material. However, Herculaneum unlike Pompeii, was not hit by rain of ash and lapilli. But only by a very powerful pyroclastic flow and mudslide that completely covered Herculaneum with more than 20m of volcanic material. While this event was tragic, no doubt, it led to unintended consequence of preserving houses, mosaics and other artifacts remarkably under volcanic debris. In 1738 AD, during excavation of a well by a farmer, was first remains of ancient city accidentally found. Among these ruins was discovered House of Neptune, a relatively small yet ornately decorated dwelling that’s believed to be owned by a sea merchant. It is best known for mosaic depicting Neptune, Roman sea god and his sea-nymph wife, Amphitrite. House of Neptune and Amphitrite of Herculaneum is located in insula V. Exactly opposite entrance to female section of Stabian baths, in formerly busiest street in Herculaneum. Compared to other houses in Herculaneum, House of Neptune was not very big in size. Besides a shop and a couple of rooms, most interesting aspect of house is open-air courtyard. Dining room adjacent to courtyard is also small and has red walls. Frescoes that adorned its insides are now in Archeological Museum of Naples. Dining room and a few other rooms were connected to a mid-sized atrium. One noteworthy feature of atrium is presence of a shrine in corner, called lararium. Some remnants of lararium are now part of Naples Archeological Museum. The few rooms in second floor of house also contain inscriptions and paintings that reflect taste and of the owner and lives of its occupants. House of Neptune and Amphitrite of Herculaneum probably belonged to a wealthy merchant. In fact, on lower floor of house with direct access to the street there was a shop. Inside which a counter used for making food and drink, a small kitchen and perfectly preserved wooden mezzanine floor, still visible today, were found, which served to reach upper floor and in which there was a shelf that was probably used to store amphorae containing wine. The very end of the house features an open-topped courtyard with an artificial grotto and a fountain, or Nymphaeum. Entire courtyard features garden paintings. Later, when an aqueduct was introduced, they redirected it to a cistern in courtyard. This cistern was also decorated with blue mosaic chips. Courtyard is positioned in such a way that a visitor has a clear and direct view of it even before entering the house. The owner wanted to give impression of a courtyard-cum garden in limited space available, so there are frescoes within that depict flowering plants and fountains. Most probably the place where owner spent their moments of relaxation, enjoying coolness of evening. In the centre of summer triclinium was a marble basin with a fountain from which water spurted in ancient times. On central wall was created a marvellous mosaic, from which entire house takes its name, depicting Neptune and Amphitrite. The mosaic, adorned all around with a frame of sea shells, was made of glass paste in brilliant colours, depicting Neptune and Amphitrite. The rest of triclinium was frescoed with scenes depicting a garden with plants, birds and fountains, to give those inside the triclinium the feeling of being in an outdoor garden. In the centre of summer triclinic of house of Neptune and Amphitrite, fountain was supplied with water from a tank on north side of triclinic. Tank was concealed by a structure with three niches, where in central niche there was a small statue. Entire structure was covered with glass paste mosaic depicting hunting scenes in upper part and a garden with plants and birds in lower part. 🎥© massimo_osamna (IG) #archaeohistories

Facial reconstruction of a 8,000-year-old man from Devil's Gate, Primorsky Krai The people who inhabited Devil’s Gate Cave are characterized by a pronounced Mongolid complex, which fits well within the range of variation of the modern Far Eastern minor race. This includes marked facial flatness with a face of medium width. The forehead is broad. Procheilia is clearly expressed. The upper eyelid fold is strongly developed, and an epicanthic fold is present. The face and nose are high, while the nasal width is medium. A distinctive feature of this population is a short cranial vault in females, and high in males. Pronounced brachycephaly is observed, which is rare in the Neolithic and has otherwise only been noted at the Boisman-2 site. The age of the reconstructed individual is estimated at approximately 20–25 years. The head is rounded in shape, very short in the front-to-back (anteroposterior) direction, and wide in the transverse direction. The cranial vault is high. The cephalic index is 89.3, which is a very high value indicating hyperbrachycephaly. The face is relatively narrow and appears round in frontal view. At the same time, the cheekbones are noticeably prominent. Horizontal facial profiling is weak, with flattening expressed at the level of the eyes and cheekbones. Vertical profiling is oral. The ears are not high. The forehead line is slightly sloping, and the frontal eminences are weakly expressed. The brow ridges are short, and overall the supraorbital relief is poorly developed. The eyeballs are protruding. The eye fissures are slanted, with the outer corners positioned higher than the inner corners. The upper eyelid fold is developed along the entire length of the eye, and an epicanthic fold is present. The forehead is of medium width and relatively low. The nose is extremely small, narrow in the wings, and protrudes forward only very slightly, though relatively tall in height. The nasal root and nasal bridge are narrow and low. The tip of the nose is rounded. The nasal wings are low and symmetrically positioned at the same level. The mouth opening is also narrow. A noticeable prochilia is observed - the upper lip protrudes forward due to pronounced prognathism of the skull. The mandible is high, while the chin is low and narrow. I think everyone needs to take a step back and stop running around accusing big creators of a conspiracy that is as of now completely baseless. FACTS: 1️⃣The Aidan & Karen audio was 100% at minimum 3rd party device recorded. I.E not recorded by the device that took the call. 2️⃣Given the above 👆there are no receipts or proof that Aidan intentionally recorded or even had knowledge of the recording. The only evidence presented is from an anonymous Proton account (similar to the type Jaython used to dump LG’s phone extraction), which is not proof of the claims. 3️⃣There has not been a full release of the 30-minute recording—only short snippets under 30 seconds in length. These snippets are clearly edited (example below) and also show ramp-speed effects on other clips, which should raise red flags. Such short durations are typically used to avoid deeper analysis, as the sample length is insufficient for proper review. 4️⃣There is 0 metadata associated with these clips to prove any authenticity. There is also 0 receipts to show this was in fact quote “sent around.” Everyone knows I don’t like Aidan Kearney. I’m not saying this for clout—he’ll probably call me a fraud anyway. If the receipts were real, I’d say so. Right now it looks like a witch hunt driven by an anonymous Proton account. Bring 100% proof of an intentional recording, or consider the source. This Proton Source can dump the goods at [email protected] or come out with it publicly do it right dropping the full file with receipts. This shit is stupid, unfounded and until that time? It should be ignored.

Hedgehogs are solitary animals so are silent - they have no need to communicate so don't have a 'vocabulary'. Even when in pain or fear they usually suffer in silence. The only time you'll really hear them vocalise is this time of year - mating season. And it's only the girls who talk.😁 The male approaches the female and circles her, trying to mount. The female turns to face him, keeping her nether regions out of his reach, and makes a chuff-chuff sound, telling him she's not interested. She'll keep this up for hours, sometimes days, until she whittles down which of her suitors is the strongest, has the most endurance and energy, is the fittest and healthiest and most determined. She wants only the very best to be the father of her precious children. Only when he's proved himself to be worthy, does the female crouch down and lay her spines flat, and allow him to mate. Inexperienced males often need to use their mouth to hold on and get into position, so this time of year you may see females with a small wound on their back. There can be more than one winner, and she'll allow other males who have made the grade to mate with her also. So the resulting litter can be hoglets with several different fathers, producing a truly diverse and healthy gene pool. This genetic diversity within a population allows it to adapt to changing environments and resist diseases. Just one of the reasons our humble little hedgehog has survived for over 15 million years!

Today was wild. I was in central Bangkok when the worst earthquake in 30 years hit. I’d just wrapped a catch-up with Saimon, talking about GDC, Web3 gaming, AI etc. After brunch, he left, and I decided to stay behind at the café to get some work in. Ten minutes later, everything started spinning. I thought I was just feeling fatigued. But then the floor swayed. Hard. The waitress ran out and told everyone to evacuate. Outside, I saw a tower across the street literally twisting like Jenga. People started filming. I looked up and thought, are we seriously stopping here to record this? It felt surreal. Then people started running. So I ran too. I was in the busiest part of town, surrounded by glass buildings and traffic. No car. I jumped on a motorbike to get to my son, then switched to a car to head to my mum’s. What should’ve been a short trip took five hours. Worst traffic I’ve ever experienced. Trains were down. Underground shut. Bridges damaged. No clear info , just fake news flying everywhere. My phone was slightly over 10%, but I managed to preserve the last bit of battery to call, navigate, and make sure we got to my mum’s safely. Now that I’m home, I’m still processing it all. Life is strange. One moment you’re talking AI over coffee. The next, you’re running through a city that feels like one wrong move could change everything. I’m grateful we’re okay. But this shook me deeply. Really hope everyone is ok.

🚨Little Devils Gang Terrorizes Midtown, Threatening NYC’s Tax Revenue and Local Businesses. This morning, around 10 AM, they robbed an innocent New Yorker in broad daylight. Four suspects were arrested and taken to Downtown Manhattan courthouse A few hours later, the same crew hit Five Below. What started as shoplifting quickly escalated when they pulled a knife on employees, turning it into a full-blown robbery, according to sources. This isn’t a one-off. Every single day, this crew is tied to multiple incidents—robberies, shoplifting, and violent confrontations. They run through the city with complete impunity, fully aware that because of their age, the law rarely holds them accountable, according to sources. Most of these younger gang members live in taxpayer-funded shelters. They get arrested, they rob people, they stab people, and then they return to their city-funded accommodations. Parents of these suspects do nothing. Why are New Yorkers paying for these gang members to hurt people—and then paying for their safe return? Business owners have been telling me this gang is costing them tons of money, not only through theft but by scaring away customers. With the holiday season around the corner, tourists may avoid spending money in Midtown or even in New York. Some may even tell friends they got robbed while visiting the city, which could have a lasting impact on tourism and local businesses. Midtown alone generates roughly 20% of New York City’s taxpayer revenue. Yet gangs like the Little Devils, coming from the Bronx or Queens, are terrorizing the area, hurting local businesses, scaring residents and visitors, and costing the city millions. If nothing changes, sooner or later they’re going to kill a cop or an innocent person. The situation is spiraling out of control, and Midtown is on edge. Every day there’s another crime, and every day they get bolder. This gang is a ticking time bomb, and the city’s residents, tourists, and businesses are watching in fear. The current state of the Islamic Republic is quite strange. From a social restrictions perspective, it is utterly incomparable to when I was young or even 5 years ago. This goes far beyond people choosing to mass defy hijab laws - the restrictions against things like mixed dancing, concerts, music festivals, rave like atmospheres, drinking, recreational drugs, and all sorts of out of marriage sexual relationships are dissolved to a unrecognizable very low bar compared to the past. No it's not Turkey or Dubai (yet) and yes people still do get in trouble frequently (particularly businesses who host things - which is why you'll go to high end restaurants where everything is happening and they don't care but they'll immediately stop you if you take a picture out of fear it will go viral). But the cat is out of the bag. In every corner of the country the rules are flagrantly defied. Not just in cute underground parties at some well connected kid's house or some hippies doing drugs in a desert 3 hours from the city - no very much in the open, often advertised on social media, and not hidden at all (both videos are from the last month - the second video is in Shiraz). This was unthinkable just a few years ago. On the other hand the political atmosphere is currently closed at a level I don't remember other than the first few months after the 2009 election. It resembles the Islamic Republic of the late 80s more than what we've seen for most of my life. And from an international relations perspective all caution & restraint are gone and you see the most extremist elements (who ironically were kept in check by the older Khamenei who mistrusted them just as much as he mistrusted liberals) increasingly running the show, eagerly acting in a way that I struggle to describe in anyway other than delusional insanity. The economy is shattered to a level in which even the upper middle class are struggling to make ends meet, let alone the poor who are living through unthinkable conditions. This is a very different Islamic Republic from the "normal" baseline my generation is used to. Quality of life continues to nosedive at a horrendous level. Uncertainty is everywhere. External attacks are no longer a fear but a near daily reality. It is increasingly unclear who (if anyone) is in charge and what direction they are trying to steer the country in. The current situation might last for a bit as a transition state, but it is very difficult to imagine something this unstable, with so many contradictions, and this reckless, being durable. At some point very soon something will have to give. It can't last forever like this.
