@Mlu__N2 Basically, in any other airport in the world, by the third missed approach, the pilots would have diverted. But in HLE, if conditions detereriorate, you have 2 options: Land or Land. Nearest runway is many hours away. It’a a short runway, 1900 M, and landing is YOUR ONLY SHOT.

@Mlu__N2 There is nothing like a go around on an airliner. That is the only time you get to see just how much power is actually on reserve plus you are light on fuel so the acceleration is pretty intense.

I believe they have to leave the plane half empty to facilitate landing which makes flights expensive. They also HAVE to land there as there is nowhere to divert to. Before they built the runway it was a five day journey by ship to the island. Now it’s ‘just’ a five hour flight.

@Mlu__N2 You should feel fortunate that your crew has the care enough to reject the landing of what otherwise was a stabilized approach. Clearly something was out of parameters, cross wind, mechanical turbulence from mountains? 4 go-arounds vs one flaming death or excursion. :)

@Mlu__N2 The wind shear is horrible there, but they got down in the end. Sensible pilots loading plenty of extra fuel, so they could have a few goes at landing before needing to divert to somewhere else.

@Mlu__N2 Why so difficult? Wind? I’ve got couple of times at Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) with 1,2km of total extension (shorter than this one) and never seen that qty of attempts 🤯

@Mlu__N2 Guess you don't know anything about that airstrip... Was planned for bigger aircrafts, but due to miscalculations on the wind directions it's one of the hardest places to land.

@Mlu__N2 So this flight takes off from OR Tambo then does a refuelling stop in Nambia, before heading out to St. Helena, it is not uncommon for landing there to be cancelled due to bad weather 🙈 Would love to go there one day, I believe it is a British territory though.
