JATO (jet assisted take off) is really cool to see, but the Blue Angels are probably the only one to use it anymore. It was often used when operating on the ice in Antartica and on the northern ice caps. Eight solid fuel rockets (4 per side) were used on the C-130. The main danger was having one break lose and fly through the fuselage of wing of the 130. If memory serves, the Navy lost a 130 using JATO in Greenland.

Retire the C-130. Buy the KC 390 or Millennium 390. Faster, bigger payload, goes farther and lower cost /hour.
