On October 30, 1963, a U.S. Marine Corps KC-130F Hercules made full stop landings and takeoffs on the deck of the USS Forrestal (CV-59) without using arrestor hooks or catapults. Key Facts - Aircraft: Lockheed KC-130F Hercules (tanker version of the C-130) - Pilot: Marine Corps Lieutenant James H. Flatley III - Carrier: USS Forrestal (CV-59) - Purpose: To test the feasibility of using the C-130 for carrier onboard delivery (COD) missions - Landings: The aircraft made 29 touch-and-go landings, 21 unarrested full-stop landings, and 21 unassisted takeoffs over a three-day period - Runway distance used: About 267 feet for landing and 745 feet for takeoff—a remarkable feat for an aircraft designed for runways over 3,000 feet long Why It Was Important The test proved the C-130 could operate from an aircraft carrier, but it was deemed impractical due to the space it required and the strain it placed on the carrier deck. As a result, the C-2 Greyhound was later developed as a dedicated COD aircraft instead.
