Newsom announced the project would be scaling back approximately 80% but said he would not cancel the entire project, in part because California would have to pay back billions of dollars to Trump's federal government. In other words, keep some of the project going so they can keep taking federal funds and avoid accountability for the money already given. The lease is for 75 years and since the deal the UAE has already made 2 billion from the meters and will continue to make those billions for the next 60 years, money the Chicago tax payers will now have to replace.
