Officially, the telescope was meant for astronomy and deep space observation. The U.S. suspected something else. Washington reportedly became concerned that the facility could also help China track U.S. satellites and support military space ops. And the location is what makes it so sensitive. From Argentina, Beijing would gain visibility into parts of space that are much harder to monitor from China. The new Cold War involves concerns that go well beyond Planet Earth. Source: NYT
