Caltech and TII Launch X1: The Ultimate Multirobot Response Team Caltech's Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies (CAST) and Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute (TII) have unveiled X1, which they dub the world's first multirobot system integrating a humanoid and a transforming drone. The core idea is simple: combine the best of walking, driving, and flying into one package to mitigate the drawbacks of each modality. The system was showcased in an emergency simulation where a modified Unitree G1 humanoid carried M4 (Caltech's multimodal fly/drive robot) like a backpack. The humanoid walked to an elevated spot, bent over, and deployed M4 in drone mode. M4 flew, transformed to drive, encountered an obstacle (a pond), switched back to flight mode to overcome it, and then reached the "emergency" site.

We might be solving the wrong problem in robotics. That’s what this makes clear. UMI → Universal Manipulation Interface A simple $400 gripper that lets you teach robots by demonstration. You hold it like a tool. Show the task. The robot learns. No teleoperation. No expensive hardware. No robot-specific data. Stanford open-sourced everything → hardware, code, datasets. What stands out to me is the bottleneck. Not algorithms. Data. Teleoperation → ~35 demos/hour UMI → ~111 demos/hour And the data transfers across robots → UR5, Franka, others. The design is surprisingly practical: → GoPro fisheye lens (155° FOV) + mirrors for depth → SLAM + IMU for precise 6DoF tracking → latency matching for dynamic tasks → diffusion policies for multimodal actions Then it scales. Cheng Chi takes this further with Sunday Robotics (with Tony Zhao). A $200 glove → deployed in 500+ homes → ~10 million real-world interactions. Not lab data. Real human behavior. From micro-drone neutralization to large-area airspace defense, a new generation of homegrown anti-drone systems is taking shape: 1️⃣ D4: Designed to detect and neutralize micro and small UAVs within a 1–1.25 km range, delivering 360° coverage in both static and vehicle-mounted configurations. Developed by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), produced by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). 2️⃣ Bhargavastra: Low-cost, AI-enabled hard-kill system built to counter drone swarms, combining guided and unguided micro-missiles, radar detection up to 6 km, and a 2.5 km strike range, with the ability to launch up to 64 micro-missiles simultaneously. 3️⃣ C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aerial System): A multi-layer, multi-sensor platform developed by Zen Technologies, integrating radar, camera-based tracking, GPS jamming, and kinetic interception to detect, track, and neutralise enemy drones. 4️⃣ Indrajaal: AI-powered autonomous defense system provides wide-area protection of up to 4,000 sq. km, enabling real-time detection, identification, and neutralization of aerial threats across critical infrastructure, including mobile patrol units. 5️⃣ Dronaam: A compact, indigenous solution offers directional and omnidirectional coverage, deployable as a rifle-style system or portable backpack unit for rapid, tactical counter-drone response.

A money machine. And right now, that machine is being priced as if demand, revenue, and adoption will keep compounding with very little friction. That is the part I find most fascinating. Because the numbers are not just big.
