Can a Top-Order Batter Really Average 11 in the Fourth Innings? While the fourth innings is tough for most, Ollie Pope's record stands out for all the wrong reasons. In 28 first-innings knocks, he averages a solid 52.46

But in 20 fourth-innings outings, that plummets to just 15.72 — propped up by a lone 82* against New Zealand at Leeds. Remove that one innings, and the average crashes further to 11.80 — a staggering 40.66-point drop from his first-innings returns !!!

A drop from 52.46 to 11.8 🤯 Crazy

Is this due to his inability against spin bowling? Can't be the sole reason as it was this guy who played arguably one of the best innings ever by a touring batter in Hyderabad not long ago

😅

He’s done well at number 3, it should be Crawley looking over his shoulder I think but Englands batting line up is in pretty decent shape, I feel the blowing line up will struggle in Oz

That is extraordinary.

How about some context, let’s see a list of say the bottom 20 4th inns averages of players with 25 or more caps? 🦁

Modern day batsmen can t handle the toughest tasks of the game I.e batting it out in day 4 and 5.

Its all mental with Pope & I really think England have to let him go for the good of the team. I really hope he can turn it around

That’s not how average works, you can’t just remove data 😂. Your overall point is valid though
