It appears there are factions within the family - a polygamous one probably. And the wives' families will fight about on whose land the body will be buried...even if formally it was settled. It can get dramatic but the dominant family wins. It's all about land and status

Death is handled very different in parts of Africa. Men dress up in costumes (masks) and perform at funerals. The goal is to entertain and the family of the deceased pay them money for entertaining. Pics from a funeral I attended

It's a common funeral arrangement dispute in areas in Africa between families. The families can't come to an agreement and leads to this kind situation. Some of the deceased go unburied for months until one side handles it themselves.
