This is pushing the Pakistan army out of Azad Kashmir, as locals are turning against Pakistan. The majority are not in favor of staying with Pakistan. The withdrawal of the Pakistan army would be like giving India a walkover. Pakistan can only go as far as withdrawing its military from Azad Kashmir; it cannot grant it independence. Let me explain. According to United Nations resolutions, there are only two options: either India or Pakistan. There is no third option. Now, if Pakistan withdraws its forces and leaves Azad Kashmir as a separate country, India would automatically become the legitimate claimant to this region according to the UN resolution. Since a resolution has already been passed in the United Nations with only two parties, a new resolution would be required for a third option—an independent Kashmir—and Pakistan cannot secure that. Forget about Azad Kashmir. In the UN Security Council, any one of the permanent members could veto such a resolution, preventing it from passing. Among the permanent members, India conducts trade worth over 61,000 billion with the UK, the US, France, and Russia. Why would they risk upsetting it over Azad Kashmir? And for a new country to join the United Nations, all permanent members must agree. India will never allow Azad Kashmir to become a UN member. If Pakistan withdraws its forces and India moves in, which it surely would, no UN resolution or nuclear threat would be able to stop it. India’s armed forces number 15 million, with a budget exceeding $20,000 billion, and if we include the reserve and paramilitary forces, the number rises to over 5 million—more than the entire population of Azad Kashmir.
