In conversation with anchor Lovisha Darad on Moneycontrol the discussion focused on crude oil prices and why fear needs to be measured through history. We studied 12 to 13 major oil rallies since 1971 where crude rose more than 50 percent. In most supply driven rallies, crude corrected meaningfully within 1 year. Only 2 demand driven phases did not follow that pattern. For this financial year, crude’s mean and median price could remain around $85 to $88.

As soon as the Strait of Hormuz was blocked, we initiated discussions with other nations. We drew from our strategic reserves and operated refineries at full capacity... When the crisis began, 40-50% of our oil was being imported via the Strait of Hormuz. Initially, oil companies absorbed the losses themselves. When crude oil prices began to rise, the government took the burden of the loss upon itself. Excise duty was reduced to keep oil prices in check, and the benefits of this are clearly visible. #WATCH | Mumbai, Maharashtra: On whether India can control inflation and fiscal deficits if U.S. sanctions on Russian crude force refiners to switch to more expensive Middle Eastern oil, Head of Commodity and Currency Research at Kotak Securities, Anindya Banerjee, says, "The discounts on Russian crude have narrowed considerably, from $15–20 in 2022 to just $2–3 now because, since the West Asian war, any kind of crude available outside the Gulf is in demand. India has also diversified its sources to nearly 40 destinations... At the current discount rate on Russian crude, the benefit is around $2–3 billion a year. We have an oil import bill of close to $150 billion a year, so it is not really a significant amount. What would be a bigger point of worry for us, if it were to happen, is if oil prices were to jump from their current levels of $80–83 per barrel for Brent all the way up to $100 or more. Every $10 increase in the average price of oil for India's imported basket roughly translates into a $15 billion jump in the annual oil import bill. The impact on the current account is around 0.4% to 2.5%... For inflation to rise, we need to see oil prices sustained at a higher level. I don't think Russian crude, or switching away from Russia to other sources that might not offer the same discount, is going to have a big impact on our macroeconomic situation at this point."
