Canada is set to get a reduction on current U.S. steel, aluminum and auto tariffs (but unlikely on softwood) as a part of a deal with the US, according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks Some of what Canada has moved on, dairy quota’s and the feds have put the ball in the provinces court, put US booze back on the shelf or there won’t be a deal Chief Canadian negotiator Janice Charette remains in Washington for talks that are continuing, mainly on autos but even if the deal is finalized, there will still be multiple auto issues that need to be dealt with during proper free trade talks The view of the Carney government, the current deal being discussed is better for most provinces and for Canada, compared than having the threatened 50% tariffs coming into place and business having less certainty To persuade sectors and/or provinces who are unhappy, watch for new policy or financial measures from the Carney government that could help make what’s in the deal more palatable #cdnpoli
