New cars are getting ridiculous. Buy a new car and we know they don’t want you servicing it anywhere else. Back into something and replace the rear light yourself — even from a junkyard — and the car knows it’s not the original part. It can even tell it came from another car via VIN and will disable the vehicle. You’re forced to tow it to the dealer, pay for diagnostics, and pay them to “encode” it so your own car will accept the part you bought and installed. Trump literally said it in a presser: the auto manufacturers don’t want you fixing your own car anymore — something we’ve done our whole lives. Right to repair is dead. They want you dependent.
