The X68000 was one of the best home computers for enjoying classic Konami and Capcom arcade games. Its hardware was so powerful that, aside from the Neo Geo, it was virtually the only system capable of delivering near-perfect arcade conversions at the time. Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. It’s still amazing to think that a game this good could fit on just two floppy disks.

With its simple mechanics and relatively reduced scope, it was possible to adequately fit in the extremely tight deadlines of the computer niche, and coupled with the technical skill of the Ocean France development team, delivering a compelling result. Not only on the Amiga, but also on other classic computers of the era.

The idea of humans and Predators joining forces to fight the Aliens is simply too good to fail. Everything about this game is top-notch—the graphics, sound, controls, and even its faithful recreation of the atmosphere from the films. It’s a true masterpiece of the genre. Sadly, because of licensing issues, it was never released on home consoles, making it one of Capcom’s most disappointing “what could have been” titles.

However, since it was designed based on the skill level built up from 1, 2, and X, it’s extremely challenging. The branching paths in particular can get brutal—if you take a harder route, it can feel like you’ve been thrown straight into hell, with nonstop chaos. And especially the final scene, where the Regular Army and Morden’s Army join forces to fight the aliens—it was incredibly moving, even for an arcade game.

Interestingly its release predates Konami’s Turtles arcade game (with a similar mechanic) by just less than a month. The title sounds like a sneeze but is intended as a Chinese-style karate yell (similar to “hi-ya!”). The kanji 破兆 roughly conveys “broken omen,” tying into the premise. The game is set in ancient China where an evil force or demon is trying to break free from a stone statue/prison.
