The Cape Verde islands, an archipelago off West Africa's coast, were uninhabited prior to European arrival. They were discovered by Portuguese-sponsored explorers, starting with Venetian Alvise Cadamosto in 1456, who sighted some eastern islands like Boa Vista. Further exploration in 1460 by António de Noli and Diogo Gomes revealed the rest, leading to official Portuguese claim. Permanent settlement began in 1462 with the founding of Ribeira Grande (now Cidade Velha) on Santiago, marking it as one of the earliest European tropical colonies. The islands became a key hub in the Atlantic slave trade, with enslaved Africans from West Africa (such as from Guinea and Senegal) imported to labor on plantations growing cotton and sugarcane. Intermarriage between Portuguese settlers (few women among them) and these Africans created a mixed Creole (mestiço) population, which dominates today, blending European and African ancestry and cultures. By the 16th century, the population grew amid trade prosperity, though later marked by famines, pirate attacks, and the end of slavery in 1878. Cape Verde gained independence from Portugal in 1975.
