The largest free lift I was part of was 60 tons - I can still hear the wire lifting slings sing when they took all of the load. Fraser River Docks in Vancouver.

It is hard to not be fascinated by cargo ships. Theyโre just so much bigger than most people imagine

I learned a lot from that experience - worked in that industry for 16 months.....certifying lifting slings, chains, coordinating gear, and everything for ships 24/7 - some intermodel. I was too young for it.

Saw 1 up close at the port of Long Beach they are massive

Iโm going to port of Long Beach next week! I canโt wait

Oh make sure your numbers are correct 1 little mess up can cost you hrs

Oh my job is easy there. I just need to take pictures and video. Iโm just visiting while at an event nearby

Yep most haven't any idea how many of those boxes a ship holds. Couple thousand on average

not me looking for container IDs that Iโve handled lol (we get a lot of MSC containers)

In the past, I booked the entire vessel of steel/other from Malaysia for US imports to manufacture, our supply grid/power plants.

Damn! How many boxes

A lot of it was loose huge beams and machinery . Had to calculate how all could fit by dimensional weight and containers for the small stuff. I also did a lot for the windmills. Crazy all the cheap steel we have in our country.

Then, of course, getting all the permits and carriers and drivers that could get it delivered to the site finding the best route.

I recently learned that the 53 footers are domestic only.

When I was a teacher (20 ish yrs ago), one of my students asked what professions paid most. Loading cargo ships was one. I had groups design their "ships " out of everyday materials (plastic plates, foil etc) and load things like pennies, etc, using electromagnetics, w/o sinking

Good work, teacher!

Thatโs what she said

You have to be there for the 40โs? That sucks in Vancouver weโre only there for the 20โs as a hatch tender

They claim there are twice as many below the water line as there is above it

I believe that. The one in the video was what, 10 deep?

I go deep as well

Hopefully it's not all flip flops and fake dog vomit.

Itโs every thing you use and buy everyday. We donโt make a lot of raw materials here

Never though bout that . But i could stand there watch them being loaded and unloaded all day and nite

I knew a guy who made a lot of money as a loader - he assigned locations on the ships.

Yes they do. And they are loaded in a specific pattern for stability and cargo segregation.

I'm very curious about the insides of the cargo ships I see in the Strait to the north of our house. I think, "Is there any open space on that thing at all?"

And they all get checked?

Humans use a lot of shit.

Thank for this post. Amazing how deep the ship is.

Video simply does not capture how the cavernous the cells are

Omg, who built this great piramids, and how could they do it?

It sure would suck to be trafficked in one of those across the open oceanโฆ right @HillaryClinton aka Evergreenโฆ

Engineering at its best

what is the average range for number of containers in shipping? min-max. How long does loading/unloading taking? What are the requirements for a container contents? What is prohibited and allowed? How are inspections, hazard checks and safety checks conducted? What else should be known for the average person?

Imagine a fake cargo ship that was actually a secret CIA prison
