There is no 4th dimension. The explanation is that it's a mathematical artifice constructed under Lorentz invariance. Now, imagine 11 dimensions. String theory and its extension, M-theory, require 10 or 11 spacetime dimensions, respectively, to be consistent. While our observed reality consists of four spacetime dimensions (three spatial and one temporal), the extra dimensions are theorized to be "compactified" or curled up into very small, unobservable shapes.
