When Nicholas Pileggi decided to write a book about Las Vegas, he researched the story of Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal and became very interested. At first, however, Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal was not interested in Pileggi's idea to write a book about him. It was only after Rosenthal read that a movie would be adapted from the book by Martin Scorsese, and that it would star Robert De Niro, that he became interested, because he loved Goodfellas (1990) and De Niro's performance in the film. The older I get, the stronger I feel that Casino is a better film than Goodfellas. I think a big reason for that is Robert De Niro. De Niro is brilliant in both films but he’s underutilized in Goodfellas. In Casino, that’s not the case- Bob is given the keys to the car & he drives the shit out of it. I think Casino is the best De Niro-Scorsese collaboration behind Taxi Driver.

Martin Scorsese on how 'Touchez pas au grisbi' (1954) influenced his works: "Jacques Becker's 'Touchez pas au grisbi' (1954) is a very famous early ’50s French gangster film with Jean Gabin. When I was shooting [Robert De Niro] in 'Casino' (1995), I felt he was taking on the stature of a late-to-middle-age Gabin. He had a lot of power to him but he had a serenity to him too and a coolness. Bob felt I was getting that way in 'Casino'. 'Grisbi' has a similar [theme] in the sense that they are older gangsters in Paris and they are getting involved in stuff they don’t want to get involved with. It’s really the tone, but I like the Gabin feeling of his deportment, how he presented himself. In fact, we used some of the harmonica music of 'Grisbi' in 'The Irishman' (2019) and Robbie Robertson did the harmonica based on the French noir music of the early 50s."
