If you follow the logic that any disparity automatically proves bias, then the only possible explanation would be an extreme age bias in the justice system. But there is a much more straightforward explanation: violent crime, for both men and women, follows what developmental criminologists call the age–crime curve. Crime tends to peak in the late teens and early 20s, and then declines sharply starting in the mid-to-late 20s. You see a version of the same pattern among women as well. A 20-year-old woman is also far more likely to commit a crime than a 60-year-old woman, even though overall rates are much lower for women than for men. The most crime-prone group, by far, is young men, especially those roughly ages 18 to 22. At every age, men are more likely to commit crimes than women of the same age, including into the 60s. Older people in general commit relatively little crime, but even within the 60-plus population, when crime does occur, it is much more likely to be committed by a man than by a woman.
