Malls used to have arcades full of video games, and in the early 1990s they were always super busy and jam packed. This is the TILT arcade at Fashion Island Mall in San Mateo in 1991. In ninth grade my friend Jason, who I used to skate with, bragged in class that he could drive a stick and that he could teach me too. They were completely unaware that the building was the Saudi Embassy. To most local teenagers, this building has long been known as a former school and there were no visible warning signs, no security personnel and nothing indicating the area was restricted or a high security zone. I’ll repeat it, they didn’t know it was the Embassy, there were no signs either. This location is frequently visited by many teenagers for photos, as it is considered a trendy spot for scenic views and social media posts. The boys did not know they were doing anything wrong. They did not attempt to break in, did not steal, did not vandalise, did not damage property and did not cause any disturbance. They simply went up, took photos and left. Six days later, at around 5.00 pm today evening, juvenile officers arrested the 17 year old, who is now spending the night in a juvenile detention centre. CCTV footage shows that the police themselves initially did not intend to press charges, recognising the incident as teenagers acting foolishly but harmlessly, with no criminal intent or threat posed. But the situation escalated after pressure from Saudi Embassy, which is now pushing Maldivian gov to pursue serious charges. At the time of arrest, only the 17 year old had a warrant. Since then, a warrant has been issued for the 19 year old and the 18 year old is expected to follow. None of these boys have any prior criminal record. They had no knowledge that they were entering a high security area. The charges claim they trespassed into a restricted zone, yet the gate remains open, the area is easily accessible and as of 3.00 a m tonight, there was still not a single security guard present. This is documented on video. If an area is truly high security, basic precautions such as signage, barriers or guards are the bare minimum. The absence of these measures shows serious negligence and it is unjust for teenagers to face heavy legal consequences for an incident that occurred due to lack of warning and oversight. These boys are being made an example of, despite the fact that many others have accessed the same location without consequence. This young lady approaches strangers and begs them to buy her formula for her starving baby. She’s a part of a team of scammers that walk around Target and do this all day long. The young lady here doesn’t even have a baby. When she gets busted by other customers she leaves the formula and attempts to run away. Why does the store allow this to keep happening? They’ve been reported multiple times but still are allowed to enter the store. My friend works at my local Target and he says when this happens they have to throw away the formula, they can’t put it back on the shelves in fear of tampering once people take them out of the store and try to return them later. This is why I never do it. I’ve seen too many people try this scam before. I was once approached by a child who was holding a can of formula and asked me to buy it for them and I asked the kid where her mom was and she said she was over there. I walked around and didn’t see anybody, I felt something was off since the kid seemed to be alone. I found an employee and immediately told them what was going on, last I saw they were walking the child upfront presumably trying to find her mom. I have a feeling the mom trained the kid to do this and what they do is return it for money to spend on other things. I always have a soft spot for children in need and I have a feeling many others do too. That’s why this is so harmful. People who actually need the help or in a bind will now never get actual help because of scams like this. I wish there was a way to do it so they can’t return it. I wish the stores would make formula sales final. That would be a step forward, what makes it worst is this happened during a shortage as well. I’ve been called cruel and heartless for refusing by these people but what’s truly heartless is using the idea of a hungry child to steal money from others.
