At least two ammunition depots have already been blown up. Despite ceasefire declarations, the Islamists continue their offensive and are likely to keep going until they are stopped. The Kurds’ problem is that they have an enormous front, which is no longer protected by the Euphrates River, and the Islamists are advancing both with mobile HTS units and with tribal militias that were previously pro-Kurdish and are now supporting al-Jolani.

On 17 January 2026, Tom Barrack arrived in Erbil to have a meeting with Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani and SDF top commander Mazloum Abdi, along with other Kurdish officials, regarding the so-called Syrian regime’s nonstop attacks on Kurdish areas in Syria. Everybody in the meeting was waiting for the American diplomat to offer a ceasefire deal that would make everyone happy and end the conflict, but Tom Barrack said that Syrian bombardment and attacks would stop only under one condition: if they accepted to join the Syrian army and attack the Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq, according to an American source in Syria. Firstly, Masoud Barzani was stunned after hearing this offer, as you can see in the following photo and video. SDF commander Mazloum Abdi was very, very shocked and angry, and was trying hard to control his anger with his hands, as you can see in the video. He was followed by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, who in the video appeared very upset and dazed.
