The Safari Rally Championship was the ultimate test of endurance, pushing both drivers and machines beyond their limits. In the early ’90s, Toyota showed Japan could rival Europe’s rally dominance, with the Celica GT-Four ST185 making history at the 1993 Safari Rally. Unlike typical WRC events, the brutal terrain demanded spare tires, crash bars, and snorkels. I love the Safari’s aesthetics..arguably the most photogenic race in existence.

In true WRC fashion, fans rushed in and flipped the badly damaged Toyota, letting Juha drive away from the crash site. The body was wrecked but mechanically it was good to go, proving once again Toyota builds the best cars. Later, the car was forced to retire due to safety regulations

The Petlyakov Pe-8 was the Soviet Union’s sole four-engine heavy bomber of World War II and one of the more underrated heavy bombers of the war in my view. Only 93 aircraft were produced after its introduction in 1936. It featured a 128-foot wingspan and four 1,340-horsepower engines for a maximum speed of 275 mph. The type bombed Berlin in 1941 and transported Foreign Minister Molotov to the UK and US in 1942. Colorized and restored footage of the aircraft.

For a while, up until around 2017ish, the Toyota Corolla lost much of its charm. In the 90s, saying you drove a Corolla was almost a flex, thanks to its massive success in WRC and touring car racing. Castrol-liveried Toyotas were burned into everyone’s memory. But recently, I’ve absolutely fallen in love with the new GR Corolla. I love that Toyota is still willing to build fun, entry-level cars for real enthusiasts. The Toyota Corolla WRC is a World Rally Car built by Toyota Motorsport GmbH for the Toyota Castrol Team, based on the E110 Corolla. It debuted at the 1997 Rally Finland, replacing the Celica Turbo ST205, and went on to score four rally wins and the 1999 World Manufacturers’ Championship, driven by legends such as Carlos Sainz, Didier Auriol, Juha Kankkunen, and Freddy Loix.
