New data from the Center for Immigration Studies shows that in Minnesota—home to the largest Somali community—81% of Somali-headed households use at least one major welfare program, and nearly 90% of those with children do. Notably, 86% of Somali families with kids are on Medicaid alone. This isn't sustainable immigration; it's dependency. Work, contribute, or don't come. Taxpayers shouldn't foot the bill indefinitely.

"What we see in Minneapolis is the authoritarian nature of this government acting as a third world nation by targeting lawful US citizens. We should be ashamed of that," said Jaylani Hussein, Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Several community leaders and elected officials gathered at the Brian Coyle Community Center on Wednesday afternoon to respond to word that Federal ICE agents are in the Twin Cities to target Somali immigrants who are in the country illegally. They say the vast majority of Somali immigrants in Minnesota are US citizens and an attack on the Somali community is an attack on all immigrant communities in the state.

I’d like to thank MP Ahmed Hussen for co-sponsoring this bill with me and for his counsel. I hope that all MPs will support this legislation. Canada is home to many Canadians of Somali heritage. Canadians of Somali descent have left and continue to leave a historic mark on Canada, with contributions that span communities across the country and are reflected in Canada’s economic, political, social and cultural life. If passed, Somali heritage month would give us an opportunity to celebrate that heritage, the role that Canada has played in supporting Somali Canadians and their contributions to Canada.
