Gene Kelly screened "The Red Shoes" (1948) at least fifteen to twenty times to different executives at MGM to persuade them to accept the script for Vincent Minnelli's "An American in Paris" (1951). He was told by the executives that the success of "The Red Shoes" was mainly due to the lead actress being foreign & if it were an American actress in that part, the movie would have bombed. Here is Michael Powell talking about it: "The American distributors put our films on their shelves, saying they were too British: a calculated insult, difficult to refute, because they were British. That was the point of a picture like 'The Red Shoes' (1948). It could never have been made in Hollywood in 1947. Hollywood had made films about art and life and love, but I can't remember a single one, and I have total recall. Gene Kelly told me that he ran 'The Red Shoes' fifteen to twenty times for different executives at MGM before he got acceptance of his script for Vincente Minnelli's 'American in Paris', and then it was mainly because he had a foreign ballerina for the part- Leslie Caron. I just called the number on the sign and was told by the first person that spoke with me that the homes were being sold to the public but you had to be Sikh to buy them. The second person, likely Manheet Singh of Juno Homes, was quick to correct the record and said the homes were open to anyone. He said the sign called it a “Sikh community” because it included a temple, and that there was a misunderstanding. I told him if a community with a Christian church in the center advertised itself as a “Christian community” it would skirt the line (and likely violate the Fair Housing Act). He argued Mormons build communities and prefer their own religion but allow others, and that the Sikh community is about believing in one God and is open to all. Under normal circumstances I would have identified myself as a member of the media but I called anonymously to ensure I received more honest answers. It was announced on the line before I started recording.

Gena Rowlands explains the reason why "A Woman Under the Influence" (1974, Cassavetes), which was first written as a play, was made into a movie: "Rowlands: John wrote it as a play. He said, “Hey, I wrote you a play.” And I said, “Great, let’s read it.” I read it and I said, “John, I couldn’t do this every night and twice on Wednesday and Saturday. I wouldn’t be able to last two weeks. I’d die.” It was a very hard play to do every night. And he said, “Don’t worry. Don’t even think about it, you’re right. I hadn’t thought of that.” He said, “Just forget it.” Then in about two weeks he said, “Okay. I solved the problem. I wrote a different play for you.” He said, “So you won’t have to carry all of it every night. I used the same characters but I enlarged different parts of the scenes.” He changed it generally to make it humanly possible. And I said, “Oh, that’s a miracle, let me see it.” And I read it and I said, “Listen, you must know a lot of strong actresses!” [laughs] I said, “I still wouldn’t be able to do it. This is really hard.” She has a nervous breakdown—there’s a lot of things that are hard emotionally to do. So he said, “Okay. I’m going to write it as a picture.” I said, “I think I can get through it once.” [laughs] “But I’m not making any guarantees.” He thought that was funny and then he wrote it thinking like an actor too instead of just a writer. I think he took that into consideration. And it is, of course, much easier to do a film when you’re doing an extremely emotional part than it is doing it onstage over and over especially.
