Note that Chavez' position on illegals makes perfect sense both economically and politically. The farm workers he represented could be easily replaced by illegals who wouldn't demand any political rights and would work more cheaply. All parties concerned, including the farm owners, understood this perfectly well. It's just amazing to me that the contemporary left has totally lost sight of exactly whose interests are served by cheap illegal labor.

It was once a universally understood truth that illegal aliens depressed wages, took jobs from Americans, strained social welfare programs to the breaking point, and subverted general respect for the rule of law.

Stop exporting your poverty to us. I couldn't have said it better.

He called the illegal Mexicans “wetbacks”, NOT the legal immigrants.

I can almost guarantee that 0/10 of the commie leftists that lionize Cesar Chavez and have him on their shirts and hats have ANY idea that he thought this way.

I like "Mexico should stop exporting it’s poverty to us." We have outsourced all kinds of work to Mexico and it does not seem to be enough to keep their people employed. There must another reason for the invasion.

Remember this was 1974 and he also mentions the Bracero Program that dates back to the 1940s. There’s always been ongoing illegal immigration problems. What’s also important to note he mentions the expression wetback which will flag this post for hate speech. History is important

The hypocrite imbecile liberals worship him yet continently forget what he did to illegals on the farms.

My mother and her family came here legally and were migrant farm workers. Cesar helped them and he was very much against people coming here illegally and undercutting the wages of my family and other legal workers.

Met Cesar Chavez multiple times when I was a Union official . A true Union legend . Not in it for personal gain , cared tremendously about his members … Cesar knew , as did Samuel Gompers founder of the AFL , that illegals undercut the Labor market and skilled workers , while driving wages down .

@ExposeGrove Meanwhile, Austin, Texas is having ice protests and there’s a very prominent street called. Guess what? Cesar Chavez.

I remember this. Illegal immigration was supported by Republicans lobbied by Big Ag and other industries who liked paying low wages. 1974 Democrats protected the US worker. Now it is the opposite. It is amazing how little some commenters here know about 20th century history.

Most Chicanos know this history! It's an abhorrent shame what is happening today with all the ignorance (willful) and lawless Anti ICE rhetoric and politicization

Cesar Chavez was also vehemently opposed to the "Bracero Program" which brought temporary Mexican contract workers to the U.S. for agricultural labor between 1942 and 1964, because the program was a "major obstacle to organizing farmworkers and improving wages and conditions"

I think he didn't mind them, but despised how they were used. IOW, if owners were paying a living wage with some benefits he would not have cared. It's because they were being used as strikebreakers that he cared.

Ironically, Chavez is namechecked by Chicano academics that press for illegal entry into the US labor force.

So he is saying that during the strikes, the agriculture corporations got the government to stop manning the border so cheap labor could come in to break the strike? Interesting.

In 2026 Cesar Chavez would be considered far right and trader to his people.

Julio Cesar Chavez was recruited by Royal, Eugene Ross, a Sal Alinsky idealist organization known as Community Service organizers. Chavez trained here for over a decade before he branched out. If you don't know the playbook. Read on it

The Delano grape strike (1965-1970) was a major labor movement by Filipino & Mexican-American farmworkers in Delano, California, fighting for better wages & conditions, led by César Chávez, Dolores Huerta, Larry Itliong. The strike lead to the formation of United Farm Workers UFW

Yes he did hate scabs. My grandfather was a police officer at the time and he came home one day and told my father Cesar and his crew were beating illegal border crossers with baseball bats. They were undermining his union for fair housing and wages

Despised is wild. He was trying to create unions and the growers were exploiting immigrants to break up strikes. They'd import them in and pay them shit wages and deplorable conditions. His fight was with growers and policy. He clarified this.
