I remember watching this on TV. It was one of the saddest days in America. Christa McAuliffe is a name that is stuck in my memory. She was supposed to be the first Teacher in Space, selected from more than 11K applicants to NASA's Teacher in Space Project.

The people who supposedly be on this that ‘died’ have later been proven they are still alive.

Somehow those astronauts are still alive.

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing…bartending at Bennigan’s in East Lansing, Michigan as a college student. The entire restaurant was silent. All I could think of was Christa McCauliff, the schoolteacher who was so exited to be going. What a tragedy.

I was in college at the time and was lined up for an engineering CO-OP program with NASA. They cancelled the CO-OP program after this disaster. It's likely my life would have went down an entirely different path. Interesting to think about.

I watched this happen live. I’ve never seen this angle. School was closed in Atlanta because it was so cold. I was sitting on the couch watching CNN and it took a minute for it to register. Then it registered. 💔

I remember being home sick that day and my dad, who has since passed away, was so excited to watch this with me on tv. I’ll never forget his face and the reaction he had. Sad day.

I remember watching this live on TV.. My friends and I were cheering the launch. When the explosion happened the room went very quiet... Not a good day!

That was a horrible day. I remember the aftermath clearly.

They are alive. Some work at NASA, some are college professors.

I was in second grade watching this is the kiva in the library at school. The carpet was orangish brown in color. The smoke making a Y shape. I’ll never forget it

@GSDogz I watched this happen at recess. I was in elementary school and our teachers obviously knew what happened but they never told us. I didn’t find out until I was home. Very sad day for us in Florida.

Absolutely terrible! The importance of using the correct components with exact specification. A simple O ring of a slightly different spec caused the malfunction.

I was watching it live in kindergarten class.

I was scheduled to go to the cape to watch the very next Shuttle take off with the Hubble Space Telescope. I was in the student center at UK, and everyone was hovering around the TV. It was horrifying. Hubble would be delayed for many years.

I saved Cap’n Crunch UPC’s to get the astronaut watch. Also had a small challenger diecast that I played with. Found a pic of the watch online.

I sat down to watch this flight and it exploded. It was one of the most horrifying scenes for the world to have to see children from school were watching it is very very sad.
