This is exactly what we have been warning about. The level of disrespect shown towards the Qur'an is unbelievable. They have invited the wrath of Allah upon themselves. Which scholar gave the go-ahead for this? Even before the disgraceful behaviour that followed, simply sitting in front of a screen and reciting the Qur'an while knowing that the audience is distracted and preoccupied is deeply troubling. We cannot tolerate someone interrupting us when we are speaking, yet the words of the King of all kings are treated as background noise, ignored and neglected. Allah ﷻ says: "When the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it attentively and remain silent so that you may receive mercy." (Sūrah al-Aʿrāf: 204) How sad and pathetic. Young people will naturally make mistakes, but it is the responsibility of the Ulamāʾ to provide proper tarbiyah and ensure that matters as sacred and delicate as the Qur'an are treated with the reverence they deserve. One fears for those who treat the Qur'ān in this manner, for on the Day of Judgement the Qur'ān will either testify for a person or against them. Even more striking is that the very verse being recited describes a condition that is painfully applicable to those involved. May Allah ﷻ protect us from dishonouring His Book and grant us true reverence for the Qur'ān. Āmīn.
