Charli xcx made two surprise appearances at Outside Lands this weekend, a day after headlining the festival herself.⁠ Charli joined The Strokes during their Saturday night set, stepping out to sing alongside Julian Casablancas on "Take It or Leave It," from the band's 2001 album ‘Is This It.’ Her appearance played off a coincidence from a few weeks ago, when both acts had put out new records on the same day in July—Charli’s ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ and The Strokes' ‘Reality Awaits.’ Casablancas brought her on with a mock concession, exclaiming, "Congratulations, you have defeated us at the album sales. Your new queen of everything: Charli xcx!” When she left, Casablancas kept going: "Charli Motherf**king xcx. Yup, she won. She won by a lot. She's a giant pop star, in our defense."⁠ ⁠ Earlier that same day, Charli had already made her presence felt without setting foot onstage. During Djo’s set, he played "Charlie's Garden,” and midway through, Charli’s face showed up on the venue's side screens with a message for him. She shared, "Joe, it's Charli.
