Get ready to rock and roll! A Sudden Stratospheric Warming is on the way. In about two weeks, temperatures 12 miles up over Canada and Greenland are forecast to spike by 50°F or more. That’s a shockwave in the stratosphere — a rapid disruption of the polar vortex high above the Arctic. When the vortex gets rattled like this, it can send ripples downward through the atmosphere, reshaping the jet stream and eventually stirring up turbulent, high-impact weather patterns at the surface all around the planet. Not every SSW delivers extreme cold or storms, but events this strong often tip the atmosphere into a more chaotic setup in the weeks that follow.

Whoahhh! I’m not an expert but this looks like liquefaction 👀 This was during the M7.8 earthquake in the Philippines last week. The ground is basically losing strength beneath the surface, usually in water-saturated soil, so it can start behaving less like solid ground and more like a thick, shifting slurry. Roads and pavements can crack, sink or tilt as if they’re floating on something unstable, and you sometimes get water and sand pushing up through the surface. It can look like the ground is moving in waves or “sailing”, but what’s actually happening is the soil structure collapsing temporarily under the shaking.

In the weightlessness on International Space Station I placed a sphere of water with an air bubble on a speaker cone, then drove it with acoustical waves from the speaker. This created a series of standing nodes and anti-nodes that responded to the frequency and amplitude. A zero gravity Lava Lamp! Will post what happens when I drove this with some of my favorite rock and roll! From Expedition 31, 2012.

🌀 New video update below on Tropical Depression Three (#TD3), which has formed off the southeast US coast with max winds 35 mph, and is expected to make landfall in #SouthCarolina early Sunday. 🌀 Vertical wind shear is keeping the storm broad and asymmetric, with most heavy weather east and northeast of the center. This will also prevent significant strengthening, but a slight increase in max winds could make TD3 a tropical storm (name would be "Chantal") before landfall. 🌀 Primary hazards will be strong winds and rip currents along the entire coastal Carolinas, along with potentially heavy rainfall, confined mostly northeast of the landfall point. Pay attention to information from NWS Charleston, SC, NWS Wilmington, NC, and other local NWS offices for the expected hazards in your particular area.
