It was not genocide, and @AbukarOsman1 was right. Under UN standards, what happened does not meet the legal definition of genocide. It was sheer stupidity for Israel’s ambassador to the UN to use such talking points to justify recognizing part of Somalia. Needless to say, it is absurd for someone representing Israel to lecture others about genocide. To clarify the false narrative being pushed, it is important to state plainly what actually happened. What happened is that the Somali government fought separatist militias known as the SNM, which were backed by Ethiopia and Israel. The government’s mistake was not the war itself, but how those operations were carried out. Those treasonous militias used civilians as human shields, and as a result, innocent civilians were killed. Later, those same militias succeeded in their plan, and the government collapsed as a result. They then began exploiting a victimhood narrative, claiming that the Siad Barre government targeted them as clan, in an attempt to gain international recognition. Siad Barre should never have allowed those militias that opportunity or allowed innocent lives to be lost. This is precisely what Farmaajo later apologized for.
