Chimney cap joints are where water tries first. Fresh mortar worked into those lines is what keeps the cap from becoming a leak. This is how it’s done.

this is not how it is done. first, slap that mortar out flat. Make it as thin as the joint on the trowel. second, use a skinny slicker and slide it in. No smearing, diggleberry.

How about putting the mortar between the stones BEFORE you place the stones.

So much wrong here. Why not butter when lay, why not rake back and caulk. Why not if gonna make that much mess just make sure its completely full not just 3/16ths pushed in... it was like a what not to do video.
