They’re expected to control over 80% of the world’s solar manufacturing through 2026, which makes projects like this cheaper and easier to pull off. That said, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing—back in 2019, new government policies caused a dip in solar installations to 30.1 GW, but China keeps pushing forward with cutting-edge tech like those perovskite panels, leaving other countries playing catch-up. Still, projects this big come with some concerns, especially for the environment. A study looking at 116 solar farms around the world found that covering so much land with panels can change the local climate—like messing with how much heat the ground reflects, impacting nearby plants, and even shifting temperatures. The effects depend a lot on the area and what’s already growing there. In Guizhou, combining farming with solar power helps soften some of those impacts, but it’s still a tricky balance. China’s setting an example for the world in renewable energy, but it’s clear they’ve got to keep thinking about how to do it without harming the environment in the long run.
