Today, the 15 surviving Filipino crew members rescued by the China Coast Guard in the South China Sea safely returned to Manila. Early on the 23rd, a cargo ship carrying 21 Filipino crew members capsized and went missing about 55 nautical miles northwest of China’s Huangyan Island, territory claimed by both China and the Philippines, which has been a flashpoint for ongoing tensions and maritime confrontations in the South China Sea. The China Coast Guard immediately dispatched two vessels and aircraft for search and rescue, successfully saving 17 people (2 perished).
