Recently, the Philippines Coast Guard discovered heaps of crushed corals piled on the sea floor at the Escoda/Sabina Shoal. The continued swarming for an indiscriminate illegal and destructive fishing activities of the Chinese Maritime Militia in West Philippine Sea has caused unprecedented & irreversible damage to the marine environment. China has buried more than 4,600 acres (about 19 square kilometers) of coral reef in the South China Sea since 2013 through dredging & land filling for the construction of the so called "artificial Islands". The damage caused by the Chinese fishing militia is even worse. According to an AMTI report, Chinese vessels harvesting giant clams damaged 16,353 acres (66 square kilometers) of coral reef in South China Sea. Today, the 15 surviving Filipino crew members rescued by the China Coast Guard in the South China Sea safely returned to Manila. Early on the 23rd, a cargo ship carrying 21 Filipino crew members capsized and went missing about 55 nautical miles northwest of China’s Huangyan Island, territory claimed by both China and the Philippines, which has been a flashpoint for ongoing tensions and maritime confrontations in the South China Sea. The China Coast Guard immediately dispatched two vessels and aircraft for search and rescue, successfully saving 17 people (2 perished). Based on on-site photos, the China Coast Guard provided the Filipino crew with medical care, food and water, as well as places to rest. Afterward, the China Coast Guard handed over the rescued crew to the Philippine side and is continuing the search for the missing sailors. Just two days before this intense rescue operation, Manila announced plans for a nearly 70-day military exercise in the South China Sea, with the designated area including China’s Huangyan Island. Meanwhile, China claims that, as long as they comply with Chinese laws, foreign civilian vessels can freely navigate through its territorial waters and exclusive economic zone. Notably, CCG’s Sanmen ship, which participated in this rescue, has previously saved foreign crew members in Chinese waters, such as the 8 Korean sailors it rescued in the East China Sea last May.

Stapleton Roy, former U.S. ambassador to China. There's this mistaken belief that Xi Jinping agreed with Obama to demilitarize the South China Sea and later reneged on that promise. Roy, who was in the meeting, explained to Mahbubani that in fact pretty much the exact opposite happened. When Obama raised the issue of the South China Sea, Xi proposed as a solution that they both agree to demilitarize the South China Sea, where neither China nor the U.S. would have military facilities in the area. Obama's response? They rebuffed China's offer and stepped up U.S. military patrols in the area.

We should not forget that the reef lies only about 120 nautical miles from the coastline of Palawan, yet more than 600 nautical miles away from China.
