That's not entirely true. If you look back at the cold war, the US and the Soviet Union spent a much higher percentage of their GDP on military. Right now, China's military spending is only ca. 1.3%-1.5% of GDP. So we're not in an arms race with anyone.

This is SIPRI data and generally accepted consensus. China’s hardware procurement far surpasses the US spending +$1T. But that’s ballpark China’s cost advantage in manufacturing (i.e. cars, ships, construction machinery etc). So yes, $350m is correct. Noob

To be clear I'm not at all defending the US military contracting system, despite building some nice high-end hardware, it's really a disaster and wastes a lot of $$. But I wish people would understand that the spending gap is way smaller than is touted You're correct that China has a pretty huge cost advantage in manufacturing. Which is why it makes the comparison even more unfavorable once you count all the "grey" dollars in, so their actual nominal spend is $450M, which becomes $700 if you adjust for that/PPP. SIPRI is not a good source for China due to what makes them a great source on all other countries, their caution. They themselves note that they don't include almost any dual-use tech, (which China uses a ton of militarily). They don't account for China's "creative" accounting due to them trying to be consistent across countries, which doesn't work when one country does this totally abnormally.
